You need to learn a large number of things if you want to become a successful technical writer. Below I have explained some of the important things that you need to learn, so that you can succeed in this career:


1. As a technical writer you need to be extremely good at explaining things in your writing. The role of a technical writer is to interpret the technical things and explain them in the simplest form so that the readers get the clear idea of what concept you are talking about. The whole purpose of your writing is to make it so simple for your readers that they do not have to put the effort in the reading and effortlessly understanding all the information provided to them.

2. The understanding of the language is also very important as it is the medium through which you will be expressing your thoughts and concepts as a technical writer. You cannot afford to make the language mistakes in your writings and therefore need to have the right understanding of the grammar and literature and how to use the right words at right places. This is a crucial part of the work and you need to pay a lot of attention to it.

3. Whether you are working as a free lancer or working with an organization, you need to be excellent at your networking skills as a technical writer. That alone will fetch you the work and give you more opportunities to grow. You need to learn how to effectively communicate with people and leave your impression on them so that they can appreciate your work well.

4. As a technical writer you need to meet the deadlines and that often remains a challenge for most of the people. Therefore as a technical writer it is very important to have the right time management skills and knowing how to plan and schedule the activities. The time management is an essential learning and will be very helpful in the long terms.

A Technical Writer is a professional Writer who engages in Technical Writing and produces technical documentation for technical, business, and consumer audiences. The Insttute of Scientific and Technical Communicators defines the profession as preparing information that helps users who use the product. This documentation includes online help, user guides/manuals, white papers, design specifications, system manuals, project plans, test plans, business correspondence, etc. Technical Writer create documentation in many forms such as printed, web-based or other electronic means.

Engineers, scientists, and other professionals may also produce Technical Writing, but often hand it off to a professional Technical Writer for developmental editing, proofreading, editing and formatting.


Required Skill sets:
In addition to solid research, language, writing, and revision skills, a technical writer may have skills in:
1. Information Design
2. Information Architecture
3. Training Material Development
4. Illustration / Graphic Design
5. Website Design Management
6. Indexing
7. Localization / Technical Translation
8. User Interfaces
9. Business Analysis

A Technical Writer may apply their skills in the production of non-technical content, for example, writing high-level consumer information.

Eligibility:
Technical Writer's are typically required to hold bachelor's degree. These programs consist of 4-year curricula that provide students with a solid grisp of English and Communications Skills so that they may write across variety of genres. Courses may include:

7. Web Writing


Career Growth:
There is not necessarily one standard career path for tecnical writers, but they may move into project management over other writers. A writer may advance to senior technical writer position, handling complex projects or a small team of writers and editors. In large groups, a documentation manager might handle multiple projects and teams.

Technical Writer may also gain expertise in a particular technical domain and branch into related forms, such as software quality analysis, or business analysis. A technical writer who becomes a subject matter expert in a field may transition from technical writing to work in that field.

Technical Writers with expertise in writing skills can join prited media or electronic media companies, potentially providing an opportunity to make more money and/or improved working conditions.
