Specialized libraries in banks, public sector organizations, law firms , newspapers , publishing firms, private sector organizations employ librarians withspecificacademic background whichwillassist them in performing their duties optimally. School libraries normally offer librarians the status of secondary school teachers.



A librarian working in a college library is treated at par with other academic staff in the college in terms of salary and status. Similar is the case with library professionals working in research organizations.

The nature of job of a library and information science person involves wide range of reading and processing of the information content through cataloging, classification and indexing, storing the documents and retrieving the required information and so on.

Career prospects:

Those who have passed Bachelor in Library and Information science (B.Li.Sc) and Masters in Library and Information Sciences (M.LI.Sc) are eligible to become Assistant Librarian in Colleges, Universities and Institutes. Those who have obtained an M.LI.Sc or Ph.D and have cleared the Junior research fellowship National Eligibility Test (JRF-NET) can become lecturers in colleges and universities departments of libraries.

To become a Librarian or Grade I librarian in a college or universality department, the requirement is M.LI.Sc and UGC-NET. Job opportunities for post graduate librarians are many in colleges, university departments, science and technology departments, research institutions, research organizations, and so on. Scientific institutes appoint M.LI.Sc degree holders as scientific assistants or Scientific officers.
