Hi

Petroleum engineers work as oil and gas specialists. They work alongside geologists and other specialists to develop methods to extract oil from underground oil reservoirs. They design drilling methods and equipment used in the extraction. They can also perform oil and gas research. Because becoming a petroleum engineer is challenging, less than 2 percent of all engineers were petroleum engineers in 2009. To become a successful petroleum engineer you must complete a rigorous education curriculum and have the skills to compete in the current job market.

Petroleum engineers divide themselves into several types:

  • Reservoir engineers work to optimize production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production rates, and enhanced oil recovery techniques.
  • Drilling engineers manage the technical aspects of drilling exploratory, production and injection wells.
  • Production engineers, including subsurface engineers, manage the interface between the reservoir and the well, including perforations, sand control, downhole flow control, and downhole monitoring equipment; evaluate artificiallift methods; and also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, and water).
Apart from good educational background. One needs where personal attributes to be a successful engineer.

Most of the jobs in engineering require team work, so they should embody the quality of team spirit. They often have to interact with specialists in a wide range of fields outside engineering. Hence must have the ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing. At the same time they should be creative, inquisitive, analytical and have an eye for detail. Apart from all these one should have research skills in order to pursue a course in petroleum engineering. Decision-making and problem-solving skills are of great importance in Petroleum Engineering, which are part of managerial skills. The ability to work in tight-schedules and meet deadlines is another important skill required if one wants to make a career in Petroleum Engineering.

Hi,

Greeting's for the day!!!

Despite the fact that petoleum engineering is an attractive and highpaying career option, not much information is available on it. Typically, a petroleum engineering graduate is given the job to discover natural sources of oil and examine the same. Similarly, developing the latest machines and equipments which can be used in the extraction and processing of oil is part of the job of a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers have global career and are hired by global oil companies.

The Petroleum Engineering is divided into 2 parts:
1. Upstream Sector:
Consists of activities like exploration, production and exploitation of oil and natural gases. After gaining a qualification in petroleum engineering, the engneers work in the exploration and production activities of petroleum and other related products. Using the latest drilling technology and geophysics for the exploration of oil reservoirs, they exploit the same for maximum output.

2. Downstream Sector:
Consist activities such as the refining, marketing and distributing of petroleum products. Production is not the only work carried out in a petroleum companyand the job of petroleum engineer does not get over as the oil is produced, rather, it starts at this stage. Refining process is crucial for an oil product as then only it can be used. Marketing and Distributing department may require a petroleum engineer to have some management degree.

Famous Personalities in Petroleum Engineering:
Some of the famous personalities who have majored in petroleum engineering are:
1. Linda Cook - University of Kansas
2. Brad R. Anderson - Texas A&M University, Harvard University
3. Yoshiaki Fujimori- Tepper School of Business, University of Tokyo
4. John E. Bethancourt - Texas A&M University
5. Mark W. Albers - Texas A&M University.

Required Aptitude or Skills:
An international career is much attractive and young engineers willing to explore can work in global oil companies and get international exposure; however, here are few things which can help in building a successful career:

1. Excellent academic record in BTech in Petroleum Engineering is a must.
2. Technical exposure during various projects carried out during the course shows that the candidate can work effectively when exposed to real scenario.
3. Excellent numerical and computer skills are expected from petroleum engineers as most of the time there ould be computer simulation required for further analysis.
4. Skills to plan out project and execute them with team spirit are further requirements.

Sound communication skills in English Langauge would enhance the chances of getting international exposure and higher position within the organization.
