Psychometric tests are of two types: One which helps us in Aptitude assessment and the other in Personality assessment.

Aptitude Tests: Help in understanding the person's ability in certain fields, his intelligence in understanding, interpreting and putting things together.

Personality Test: Help in understanding the personality types, traits and behavioral patterns. That is this helps in understand how do you react to a certain situation, what are your preferences and attitudes.

The results of these tests are generally given in a form of a descriptive report. Many times, the report details out an explanation of what each term means in the report.

Now, whether there is a need of a counselor or not in analyzing it is based on the need of the individual. A Counselor can help not only to interpret the report, but also to relate the analysis to the needs of the client.

Being an expert in the field, he/she can throw parallels to the queries of the individual vis-a-vis the analysis. An expert / Counselor can add value in the following ways:

  1. Analyse the report
  2. Help you understand your competencies based on the report and certain individual discussion
  3. Explain how to leverage the strengths towards making right decisions
  4. Support on how can you prioritize in balancing out your competencies to achieve your goals
  5. Clarify your confusions based on the report outcomes

In conclusion, yes, the reports are self-explanatory in terms of the terminologies and their applicability. However, an expert / counselor can better relate the interpretations of the report to individual needs and queries.

Hello Priya,

Agreed that the reports are self explanatory. But being a human, we have tendency to follow and understand what we wish to understand, which is not what the report is all about.

The result must be interpreted only by an expert counselor in the field. Mainly because he or she being a counselor understands human nature and knows how to pass on.certain information.of shortcoming to the client. Can also provide tips to the child to improve on.certain.areas specified in.the report. And lastly, please note a career choice is made on the basis of interlink or a combination of various aptitude in sync with IQ and Personality, which as a layman would be difficult for the student and his family.

Also while discussing many points are highlighted which helps lighten the stress and releave the client.

Hence meeting a counselor with the test report is essential.

Wish you good luck....
