Dear friend,

You can study psychology at plus two level in most of the schools. Psychology can be opted for 11th and 12th class at any CBSE or ICSE school. However only those schools prefer to allow students to choose this subject which have teachers for this subject. You can choose psychology as one of the main five subjects for CBSE board or you can choose it as an additional subject for plus two level. For this sixth subject then you can appear as a private candidate in your senior secondary certificate exam in 12th.

Psychology is also available inschools following ICSE board.

Hello

Thank you for choosing Meracareerguide and writing to us. I see one of our counsellors Noorjahan Khan has already advised you over studying Psychology at school level. I am writing to you to expand your knowledge on this field and about the admission process at college degree level.

First of all I appreciate your interest in Psychology and very good on that. I would like you to ask yourself why do you like Psychology first of all. Students at your age usually get attracted to some course for various reasons but as they grow up, they regret and change careers. It is advisable for students to understand their interest and accordingly vision what they want to be in future. So I want you to explore what Psychology is and what are the other divisions in Psychology. I also would like you to see what division/ branch of Psychology interests you the most. Now, try to vision your future based on the choice you have taken. This will internally motivate you and keep you aspired on the long run.

For admission at degree level, you need to complete 12th standard with definitely Biology and Chemistry in it. It is sometimes okay if you are unable to study Psychology at school level as universities do accept students into Psychology degree courses though if they have not studied Psychology at school level. Also be aware that colleges conduct entrance tests for admitting students at Bachelors level in Psychology. The entrance test will test you knowledge on basic biology, chemistry, maths and English subjects. It is expected to clear the entrance test with minimum first class to be able to get admitted for a BSc/ BA Psychology degree. You are also required to have passed your 12th grade with a very good percentage.

Regarding branches of Psychology, please look at the pic below.
Private Questions

These are the overall branches of psychology but in India students will usually study four areas of psychology from the picture above and they are - Clinical Psychology, Industrial/ Organisational psychology/ Counselling psychology and School/ Educational psychology. There are very few universities offering electives like experimental psychology, developmental psych, Biological psych, health psych or personality psych. It requires a careful search for the universities that offer your interested specialization. But you can definitely study any of the four specializations that all Indian universities offer, as mentioned in the beginning.

If you require further info, please feel free to write. All the best.
