Psychiatrist diagnose, treat and try to prevent human mental, emotional and behavioral problems. They review and organize data concerning the patient's family, medical history and onset of symptoms and examine the patient to determine the general physical conditions using special diagnostic tests. After understanding the nature and severity of the mental disorder , they decide upon an appropriate treatment plan using a variety of psycho therapeutic methods and medications. They work in collaboration with psychologists , occupational therapists and social workers for the rehabilitation of their patients. The other area in which psychiatrist work are psycho sexual and marital problems, de-addiction, relationship problems, child and adolescent psychiatry etc.The aspirant can undergo internship in regular hospitals, , polyclinics as well as mental hospitals. They can also take up internship in drug de-addiction and neuro psychiatry centers.
Behavioral sciences are going to dominate the medical scenario in the next few years. Lifestyle diseases like depression, cardiac illness, hypertension, anxiety etc are emerging as the biggest health hazards for the young population. While prescribing treatment for such diseases , the physicians need to take into account the mind and body relationship. To make a career in psychiatry one has to go for post graduate degree or diploma in psychiatry after completion of MBBS.
