Hello Somi Tiwari
Glad to meet you here in CareerGuide.com
We help you find suitable career.

You are a B Tech computer science graduate. Great to know that and you want to build a career in networking field. Nice decision because there are ample opportunities in that field.

To build your career around network related field, you need to have in depth knowledge in networking. Even a person with basic computer fundamental knowledge can become network engineer if he learns compute and networking hardware.

A network engineer, also known as network architect, designs and implements computer networks. Unlike network administrators, who perform day-to-day support, the network engineer focuses on high-level design and planning.

High end networking engineer courses revolve around international and national certifications obtained from networking related software companies. For LAN/ WAN administration MCI, Unix Administration, Linux, CNI is required, while for WAN administration CCNA, CCNP, CCDA etc is required. Specialized training programs related to internet security can also be added in this list.

I suggest you CCNA or CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Administrator or Network Professional).

Always be successful in your endeavors.

Dear Somi,

Thanks for writing to www.CareerGuide.com!

Dr. K V Anand has already explained details about networking field. I would like to share general works profile of BTech Computer Science graduates and scope of networking field in india.

General Scope of BTech:
Computer Science has broad field. BTech (Computer Science) course makes the students aware about the software and hardware aspects of Computer. The BTech graduates can work any of the following area:

Application Development, Database Administration, Hosting Service Management, SAP Systems Management, Client-Server Systems Manager, Computer Systems Specialist, Game Developer, Database administrator, Network Administrator or analyst, Network Systems Manager, QA Tester, Quality Assurance Analyst, SAP ABAP Programmer, SAP Project Manager, Software Architect, Software Developer, Software programmer, Software Tester, Software Trainer, Systems Engineer, Technical Architect, Information Systems and so.

The major job profiles after B. Tech in Computer Science are in academics, private sector and public sector such as DRDL, ISRO, ONGC, HCL, ISRO, ECIL and BEL. They can also attend competitive exams conducted by the Government.

Scope of networking
Of course, there is scope for Networking in india , but it has not yet fully grown up. For networking, the service providers like Airtel/Reliance hire professionals for configuring/maintaining/designing their network. These professionals may not necessarily be BTech (computer science) graduates. Mostly service providers hire BCA/MCA or BSc/MSc or those who have completed course in computer networking from NIIT APTECH etc.

Tips to make career in networking
Well, if you want to start your career in networking, you need to know what do you want to do first :

  1. If you want to design new protocols or work on existing protocols, you should focus on programming
aspects and now with the advent of Openflow & SDN , things are much easier. Get some courses from
coursera, ALICOS or other online course providers on SDN and start learning programming.

  2. If you are interested in designing of network, then you should go for CCNA and have sound
knowledge of some technology, be it routing & switching or voice protocols or video protocols.

  3. If you want to do programming on network interfaces like SDN or network operating systems , then
focus more on C programming , Java internals ,operating system and data communication.

  4. If you are looking for H/W programming on network devices, then you should focus on Verilog , Matlab
    and stuff.

  5. If you are interested in testing, then you need to play around with automation, should have hands on
tools like spirent, IXIA and so on. Added advantage is CCNA and CCNP. You would setup topology
connecting different devices (Routers ,Switches ,UCS, and so many other devices).

  6. If you would like to just manage the network, then you need to be good at CCNA ,CCNP and further
CCIP. Your work will be to setup network for the enterprise, fulfill the requirements and maintenance.

Hope this answer is helpful. If you have more queries, feel free to ask questions.

Wish you bright career!
