Communication skills are definitely very important for any professional, though they may be more for certain professions like journalism.
As a biotechnologist you will have to plan projects, experiments, get approvals for proposals, write reports etc. As a new joinee, there may be more of lab work, but as you rise in hierarchy other tasks mentioned will also come in. You need to have sound written as well as oral communication skills. You will also need good presentation skills as you move along.
However, as a beginner just average communication skills will be fine and in case you are aware that it is your weak area, please make a sincere effort to improve them.
