Hi Arpita,

These days, it's possible to have cross disciplinary curriculum. Nobody asks for a gap period when you wish to sit for an entrance examination. If you are taking a conscious decision and you are convinced, just give it a go. For example, there is a course in IIT Kharagpur, for Medical doctors (MBBS) too. If you have any specific queries, get back to me.

Good Luck!

Interesting question.

But firstly before you apply for the Medical entrance exam, please do ponder why you wish to do the course???

What would be the advantage of the course for you in future??
Why did you do an engineering course???????? If medical was your ultimate goal?????
Now how would engineering help you in the medical field??????
Would you be able to dedicate another 5 1/2 years towards a Graduation course, whereby your friends would be pursuing either a masters degree or job?????
Once you get an answer to the above questions, the answer to your question would automatically be answered.

Whatever is the reason for your gap, you need to answer more practically but also supporting the emotional side to it too.
But please do remember, being honest at all times would not help but also do not fake to the extent that people cant trust your reply.

As far as possible keep it simple with a little emotions but practical touch.
Support it with your work knowledge background too.
eg. You wanted to study medical but since all are engineers at home, so you pursued engineering, but back of your mind Medical still ruled. And once you got into the job, you found out for yourself that Enginnering is not your stream.
It took you 4 years to decide because you were still exploring all streams in engineering to see if you fit anywhere, but ultimately you realised what you would be good at and decided to pursue your dream of medical.

Please do reframe something on such grounds.
Personalise it and make it seem more real.

Hope this answers your query.

Wish you good luck..........

Dear Aspirant,

I am to surprised like Ms. Mukherjee, with your question.

You being a software engineer, you wish to do medical course? I am sure that there is something terribly wrong with you and that needs to be sorted out first.

Instead of the gap question, they will give a standing ovation to you for choosing medical field after software field smile

I strongly suggest you to be best sure of what suits you for your career. I would suggest you to undergo an online psychometric test from CareerGuide which will help you understand yourself in respect of your strengths, weaknesses, emotional quotient, etc. and will exactly tell you which career is ideal for you.
You can then call counsellors to discuss.

Best wishes!
