Hotel Management also known as Hospitality management, includes a whole lot of work areas right from Hotel industry to Travel and tourism industry to Airlines to Hospitals etc.

But generally speaking Hotel management caters to the hotel industry mainly.

To get into hotel management you could either pursue a Diploma after 10th or pursue 12th any stream, then after clearing an entrance exam you could pursue BHM degree course a 3 years degree course.

The course is equally divided into theory whereby you attend lectures in colleges and the other half id dedicated to practical experience which means working as an intern in various hotels and in various departments.Please note that the course comprises of morning attending college lectures and evening which includes internship at hotels.
Hotel Managers
During the internship you are exposed to all the departments starting from:

  • Front desk operations: This is themainand the most important job ofthe hotel Welcoming the guests is very important. As we say, " First impression is the last impression".
  • Guest Management: Another important aspect of the hotel is to see the comfortability of the guests. Proper allocations of the rooms, to room service to propermaintenanceof the room,ambianceetc is a part of therolehere. As an intern, please note that you would have to do the menial job like changing curtains, putting flowers ordecorationsin the room, tochanging bedsheets, escorting the guests to the rooms.
  • Food and Beverages: Another important role is Food and beverages.Servingthecustomerfood as per his taste and liking comes here. Asan intern,you would be in charge of proper cooking and serving. Sometimes taking order and telling the guests about variety of options available is your job. The course would also involve tasting of veg and non-veg food as well asliquor. Knowing of different taste of thebeverage is anotherimportantpart of the job, and as an intern you are in chargeof this department too
  • Housekeeping: This involves keeping stock of all the requirements of running the hotel. It involves logistics and maintaining the stock. Keeping a note of the required food items orculinaryarticles needed,household items needed etc, is another aspect of the role as a BHM graduate.
Please note that during internships, you would be exposed to all kinds of menial jobs and exposure to all departments. Also note there is no fixed timings of work in this industry.

Once you Graduate you could then select a department of your choice, but generally a fresher starts as a Front desk management or guest relationship executive.

Once into a job, it is advisable to get certificates and diploma in areas you are interested in.

Also remember knowledge on different languages and computers do play an important role. Being innovate and creative is the key to succeed in this job market.

Hotel Management is a good career option and has good scope and growing career options.

A good bachelors degree in hotel management is best recommended.

Different Roles in Hotel industry:
General Managers: Such professionals are responsible for all operations in a hotel.
Resident Managers: Bestowed with the job to be available at just a call away.

Executive Housekeepers: These professionals are expected to ensure cleanliness in the hotel.
Front Office Managers: Most of the hotels own front desk, Front Office Managers manage the same.
Convention Services Managers: These professionals work in close coordination with client and the conferencing facilities offered by the hotel for various conventions, meetings, seminars, etc.
