There are a number of things that a bio technologist needs to learn apart from academics that would be of great help in the long terms:


1. Bio technologists need to have the curiosity and knowledge about the living world. They need to go around and learn about the living objects, how the things are there in this world. They have to be extremely curious and fascinated about the idea of the biological things and see the science behind them, then only they can devise new innovations in this field through the advent of technology.

2. Bio technologists need to have good understanding about the technology. Therefore you should work on understanding the various technology and the devices that are used in this field and learn about their use and their operations. It is very much required for bio technologists to have clear understanding on how to set up those devices and use them with great accuracy so that the results could be derived correctly. Thus the technological knowledge is very much required.

  1. Bio technologists usually work in the team settings. They have to coordinate with other scientists, technicians and engineers in various parts of the project. Therefore they need to have nice interpersonal skills so that they can contribute really well in the team settings and help others in reaching the project goals.

4. The bio technologists are also required to have excellent communication skills. The world today is extremely professional and one has to be really impressive in his or her communication skills so that they can be effective in their work. They should be able to communicate their ideas well whether its spoken part or written, they have to be good at both.

5. The bio technologists need to learn the time management skills. Working in the project settings require them to manage the time well so that they can meet the project deadlines and therefore they have to keep a time check on each part of the project so that they can be effective in their contribution.

Although a strong academics is mandatory for having a good career in biotechnology. But asides that a biotechnologist should have following qualities-

1. Team Work

They should have ability to work in a team.


They should learn scientific writing.

It is sometimes necessary for a biotechnologist to publish their findings and publications requires a polished skill of writing. A critical analysis is required to get something out from their work and findings, so one should have that skill as well.

3. A fair knowledge of Intellectual property related issues

One can opt a diploma course, while pursuing their masters, in IPR. Various institutions and universities offer these one year diploma courses via distance mode.

GNOU, New Delhi
Besides all these an experience in practical aspects of biotechnology is advantageous.

You can opt for summer training somewhere in a laboratory India and abroad. This will help to get insight of actual work of biotechnologists.
