A Technical Writer is a Professional Writer who engages in Technical Writing and produces Technical documentation for technical, business and consumer audiences. The Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators defines the profession as preparing information that helps users who use the product. This documentation includes online help, user guides/ manuals, white papers, design specifications, system manuals, project plans, test plans, business correspondence, etc. Technical writer create documentation in many forms, such as printed, web-based or other electronic means.

Engineers, Scientist, and other professionals may also produce Technical Writing, but often hand it off to a professional technical writer for developmental editing, proofreading, editing and formatting.


Required Skill Sets:
In addition to solid research, language, writing and revision skills, a technical writer may have skills in:
1. Information Design
2. Information Architecture
3. Training Material Development
4. Illustration / Graphic Design
5. Website Design Management
6. Indexing
7. Localization / Technical Translation
8. User Interfaces
9. Business Analysis

A Technical Writer may apply their skills in the production of non-technical content, for example, writing high-level consumer information.

Technical Writer Responsibilities and Duties:

5. Create, compile, and deliver software developmental documentation packages.
6. Review, revise, modify or edit documents prepared by others.
7. coordinate project plans, budget and determine resources.
8. Compile, organize, and write online help files to support end-users.
9. Write technical document in compliance to the company;s established standards and guidelines.
10. Evaluate and recommend revisions to standards and guidelines
11. Provide writing, editing, and design support to other team members.

As with above Roles and Responsibilities, the Technical Writer does not experience much of Social Interactions and most of the times work only with Technical data.
