Ayurveda means “Knowledge of life”. An Ayurvedic physician is also known as “Vaidya” in India. Ayurvedic Practitioner is an individual with the training of preventive healthcare, nutrition, lifestyle pathology, and disease management through traditional Ayurvedic medical science principles and practices. Ayurvedic physicians work by understanding the imbalance in the patient’s three humors such as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Any imbalance in three humors of the body leads to disease and illness. Ayurveda has four concepts which are Panch Mahabhutas (five elements air, water, fire, earth, and sky), Tridoshas (Vat, Pitta and Kapha), Sapt Dhatus ((body fluid), Rakta (blood), Mansa (muscular tissues) Meda (adipose tissue), Asthi (bone tissue), Majja (nerve tissue and bone marrow) and Shukra (generative tissue including sperm and ova)) and Malas (waste). These altogether guides the preventive, promotive and curative aspects of the practice of Ayurveda. An Ayurvedic physician is more of a practitioner within the holistic medicine world and looks at the whole person to understand the mental, emotional, and physical state, and how these may all relate to and cause disruptions in any of the patient’s problem areas.
Internship of one year is mandatory as part of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS).
