Hello friend,

The academic record of a person is an important aspect of study period. The academic record in school and graduation means good grades, in post graduation, it is again good marks along with what you have done in your research or what type of research you have conducted. You must be aware that in post graduation the fourth semester is for research purpose. In this semester you carry out a research project under the guidance of a professor. The quality of research matters a lot. The research papers published from your MSc research project. In which journal you have published your research findings. Technically speaking a person holding a degree in geography is known as geographer. But due to severe competition in getting a desired job, person holding a doctoral degree in geography has an edge over a post graduate.

How many training programs or conferences you have attended or participated. Similarly in your doctoral degree program the quality of research work done, handling of instruments, research paper published in peer reviewed journals. Besides a doctoral degree holder is also supposed to have additional academic qualifications, such as National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC-CSIR or by a state organization.

The job opportunities for a geographer are mainly in governmental sector such as schools, colleges, universities, research institutes or governmental laboratories. The job opportunities in private sector are in companies which are involved in explorations of oil, gas, minerals. Here the academic record do matter but, person may be selected on the basis of interview performance.

The person having only post doctoral degree is eligible to get job as school teacher, which is a permanent and teaching based position. If you wish to pursue your career in research or in novel things, then you may apply for Research Associate or senior research fellow or junior research fellow. These positions are in a research based project, which has a duration of normally of three years but may be extended for another one year, based on the performance of last three years. The selection of a person for these temporary positions is on merit, therefore, the academic record do matter. There is another position after MSc which a permanent position, technical officer.

After a doctoral degree you may join as lecturer, assistant professor, assistant scientist in colleges / university / institutes. The selection is based on Academic Performance Indicator (API) Index. The person is required to furnish information other then personal like, academic grades, research publications, trainings done, conferences attended, students guided.

So the academic record is very important to get a job in governmental sector.
