Chemical engineers build a bridge between science and manufacturing ,applying the principles of chemistry and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals. It is one of the most diverse branch of engineering ranging from biotechnology and nanotechnology to mineral processing and covers different segments of chemical technology in mineral based industries, petrochemical plants, pharmaceuticals and petroleum refining plants. The basic eligibility criteria to get admission into BE/B.Tech in chemical engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. There are both degrees as well as diploma courses for chemical engineering. One can opt for the three years diploma course after the 10th standard (SSC), or go for a four years BE or BTech , selection into which is made on the basis of marks secured in 10+2 exam and marks secured in 10+2 exam and rank secured in all India Engineering Entrance Examination-JEE Main. However to seek admission in eminent IITs one has to clear JEE Advanced.

To join the prominent engineering colleges etc as a professor one has to puruse MTech in chemical engineering preferably followed by PhD. The admission to MTech programme is on the basis on performance in the entrance examination i.e Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering.

Dear aspirant

Thank you very much for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com A professorship is a great career and i am certainly happy to guide you on how to become a professor. Before we go into the topic let me please introduce myself. I am Gomathi Venkat and i am a professional counsellor practicing in this industry for over 23 years now. I am a specialist in guidance and counselling and i do especially on education choice and career line counselling for students and all other people. So now let me explain how to become a professor.

To become a professor in any field one must have either of the two qualifications - Master degree or the PhD. With a Masters degree one would take upto 6-8 years to become a professor but with a PhD degree one would take 2-3 years to become a professor. In India, every PhD applicant needs to follow a 10+2+3 route or a 10+2+4 route to apply for a phD. This means you should complete a 10th class with minimum first class mark, 12th class with a minimum first class mark and also enroll into a three year bachelors degree like the BA/ BSC/ BCOM and pass with a first class or enrol in a four year bachelors degree like BE/ BTECH and pass with a first class. As you desire to be a professor of chemical engineering, you can study BE/ BTECH Chemical engineering in India

Completing this Bachelors, you can apply for a Masters degree like MENG/ MTECH Chemical engineering.

1. So after your masters degree, you can apply for UGC-LEC exam and get qualified with a pass mark. WIth this UGC LEC certificate/ UGC- NET/ UGC-SET score universities and colleges will initially recruit you as a lecturer. After a minimum of 5-8 years you can be promoted to a Professor.

2. Next you can consider studying for a PhD. A PhD is highly recommendable if you are considering to progress in an academic career. A Master degree will not help in the long run. To study a phD in chemical engineering, you should complete 10, 12, Bachelors and Masters degree with over all first class through out. Next write GATE/ UGC-NET exam as the qualifying entrance exam. You may also write UGC JRF to be qualified for monthly stipends while studying your PhD.

After completing the PhD you can directly work in an Assistant professor role and can get promoted to Professor within 2-3 years.
