Food Technology is the study of science related to the processing of the foodstuffs. These process involves processing of foods, sea foods, vegetables, beverages and juices, meat, cooked foods, manufacturing of confectionery and snacks as well as packaging of the foodstuffs for marketing purposes.

The food technologist is trained to apply the scientific knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology and engineering to the processing of foodstuffs, their storage, preservation, quality control and for research purpose.

The Food technologist job entails the following:

Research for devising the new and improved technologies for food processing.
Guiding the conservation, processing and preservation of food stuffs.
Creating new food stuffs generated from plant and animal sources. The sources could be land or water.
Improving existing techniques for improving and economizing the processing of food products.
Adding value, improve or creating new tastes for providing impetus fro marketing and consumption of processed foodstuffs.
Evolving measures such as insect control, fungicide treatment, moisture control, infestation control to keep the food for long tome without any deterioration.
Examining food stuffs for microbial contamination and chemical adulteration, food value etc. by biochemical, microbiological and nutritional quality tests.
Developing new methods and process for recovering useful and utilizable by products from industrial and domestic wastes of foodstuffs.
Use of processes such as blending and antioxidants to improve the quality of food products.

The branches the Food Technologist generally include cereals, grains, meat and poultry, dairy products, juices and beverages, flavors, stabilizers, preservatives, colors, additives and nutritional value products.

Candidates must hold a BSc (in Physics, Mathematics, Biology, fnf and Chemistry) or BTech/BE (in food technology) degree with the minimum required marks as defined by a university or college in order to enroll in a postgraduate food technology study
