There are two paths that students, who are fresh out of high school after completing their 12th board examinations, can take. There are two schemes of LLB courses offered which are apt for the various differing needs of aspiring advocates: either a conventional 3-year LLB course for graduates scholars who hail from different academic backgrounds or 5-year integrated LLB course for Class 12 which begins after class 12th. Some examples of integrated law programs are:

  • B.Sc. L.L.B.
  • B.Tech. L.L.B.
  • B.A. L.L.B.
  • B.Com. L.L.B.
  • B.B.A. L.L.B.

3-year LLB versus 5-year LLB

Which is the better option: a three-year LLB   or a 5-year integrated law programme?  This question remains a burning topic for many students. The two programmes courses are exemplary in their own right as they are suited for diverse requirements. Both the programmes can exist side by side.

These integrated courses of study are beneficial as they provide a two-fold knowledge of law and arts, science and commerce streams. It is meant for students who want to carve a career in law and unlike those who pursue LLB for three years as a degree course that adds value to their resume and whose discipline in focus is something other than law. Graduates who missed the opportunity to take up law after 12th find the three year LLB course as their saving grace.

Completing two degrees separately requires an investment of 6 years but with an integrated programme of five years students can save up on their precious time and wouldn’t stray from their path to become a lawyer.

However, there has been a visible shift in the trend as more and more colleges and universities are now offering integrated courses. This began with the founding of National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore in 1986 and the commencement of five-year integrated LLB course.
