Hello My Dear Architecture Aspirant,

I really liked your question and I am very glad that you approached CareerGuide.com for seeking information and guidance on the admission to the Architecture course.

Architecture is a wonderful and exciting field and the demand for architects is very much high in the industry. Architects are considered as intellectually more intelligent due to their articulate, designing and innovative minds and attitude. Architecture is one of the esteemed courses in India and Architects are very much respected and honoured in the industry and society.

Educational Criteria:

For becoming an Architect, you need to get admitted to the under graduate course in Architecture which is called as Bachelors in Architecture (B.Arch) from recognised University and recognised by Council of Architecture New Delhi.

B.Arch course is of 5 years after HSC.

Eligibility to get admitted to B.Arch is:

1. HSC with minimum 50% marks and with Maths as a mandatory subject

or

2. Diploma (10+3) any stream with 50% marks

Firstly after HSC or Diploma, you need to appear for a common entrance test conducted by Directorate of Technical Education or by NATA & MASA.

Once you clear the entrance with the requisite cut off, your name will appear on the probable list of architecture colleges in the state.

You will then have to decide which college you would like to get admitted to.

The above was about the educational eligibility to be called as an Architect.

Skills required by Architects:

Basically the B.Arch course teaches everything possible to become a good architect, however the below aspects may also be considered for becoming a good architect:

  • Design Talent

  • Engineering ability

  • Social Awareness

  • Business Aptitude

  • Legal knowledge

  • Project Management knowledge

  • Leadership skills

  • Team building skills

  • Communication skills

  • Behavorial skills

  • Visualiing skills

  • Forecasting skills

  • Construction Management

The above skills are over and above what is taught in the B.Arch course in the syllabus.

Today Architects are not only expected to be masters in designing, but also expected to have Project Management and Business knowledge too. Without these two, projects today cannot be done efficiently and productively.

Remuneration to Architects:

Remuneration amoutn differs from city to city and from company to company.

However generally, a fresh Architect candidate if he / she joins a proprietory firm, may be able to get about Rs. 25000 per month. After getting experience of about 3-5 years, this salary may rise to about Rs. 40000. in the corporate, a fresh Architect may be able to get around Rs. 25000 per month and the limit is no limit for high salary based on experience and acquired skill

Best Luck

Dear aspirant

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com. Good on your decision to understand the skills to become a good architect. An architecture profession requires a basic qualification to become
an architect in future. For this it is necessary to study compulsorily maths until 10th and 12th level. Other subjects are exemption. Without maths you cannot do an architecture course or also become an architect engineer in future. Some of the basic skills that an architect requires are listed below.

1. Design talent - You need to have avery good aptitude for design and be a talent in this. As an archietct you should be able to think creatively for multiple designs and draw them for buildings. For example you should also specialise with either exterior elevation design or interior elevation design. As a designer you should also know how to draw an elevation within the given and required space. So a design talent is very essential and in fact the basic skill to become an excellent architect.

2. Engineering ability - You should have engineering ability to become an architect. An engineering ability means you should know the technical or engineering aspects of a building and also understand how your architectural design can facilitate through the engineering technicalities in your building construction. Therefore you should also have a deep understanding of the engineering techniques featured in your building construction.

3. Social awareness - You should have social awareness to be a very good architect. For example you should have awareness to climate and environment and use materials that are only efficient in your designs. For example if your construction is in a very hot climate, you should use materials that may offer cooling aspects for people living within the building. You should not use materials that will pull heat from the environment into the building.

4. Business aptitude - You should have the right business aptitude. You should know how to attract people with your business tactics. For example, you should offer variety of designs and not do only repeated designs to attract customers. You should do more business tactics to earn profits through your designs.

5. Legal knowledge - finally awareness of legal knowledge is essential for an architect. You should be aware to what height a building can be construcetd in certain areas and also understand if the construction phase has gone through all legal evaluations. Evaluating whether the land pass through legal conditions is also an important skill for an architect.
