Dear Arun, many thanks for writing to Meracareerguide.com. Here you have not mentioned your subject in which you are pursuing BTech. Since you are in second year of your degree program, you have to finish the degree with good marks. To become professor in your field or any other field, a minimum degree of post graduation is required. IN your case, after BTech, you have to do MTech in the same discipline. Your academic grades will decide your future to make an entry into a good university or institute.

To make your career as professor, you have to make entry into government sector (colleges, universities or research institute of governmental laboratories) or in privare organization, there are emany private colleges, universities and institutes. But in my opinion if you really wish to achieve success in your career the you should better join a doctoral degree program after completing your MTech degree. The reason being is that due to sever competition in jobs a person having a doctoral degree will definitely have an edge over a simple MTech.

Unorganised Sector

You have to make an entry as assistant professor in college, university or institute. But the entry level is not easy specially in government organization. Besides academic qualifications, you will be needing some years of relevant experience and some additional qualifications.

These additional qualifications are number of research papers, review articles published in the journal of international repute. How many book chapters you have published or how many books are there to your credit. The number of MTech and BTech students guided. The number of international or national conferences / symposium / workshops / attended or participated. The training programs you have attended to improve your technical skills.

After having all these things, you will be inducted as lecturer or assistant professor. Then to become full professor, you have work hard. Being professor, you will be involved in teaching and research. You have to be master in your subject. You should have good feedback from the students. IN research field, you have to supervise the post graduate or doctoral degree students. Form the students research work, you have to publish the data. All these things are important to get promotion. After Assist. Professor, you will become Associate Professor and after eight years you will be eligible to become Professor. In Colleges, the entry level is Lecturer, then Sr. Lecturer, the Reader and then Professor.
With all my best wishes,

Good Luck...

You have to improve upon your professional credentials, by conducting research and teaching. The teaching you may join after MTech degree. But in government sector, entry after MTech degree will be little difficult. Since you are studying in Ghaziabad, I believe that you must be pursuing your BTech from a private institute of college. You may join this college after completion of your MTech degree. Here you will get the relevant experience. This experionce you may utilize while applying for a lecturer or assistant professor job in university or college.

Here I would like to suggest you that if you join PhD degree program while teaching, then it will help you a lot. As per rules you may pursue in service doctoral degree while doing the job of a lecturer or assistant professor.

But to progress in career and become a Professor in your life, you have work on your research aspects besides being busy in teaching. You may guide students, write research papers, win research proposal from funding agency and supervise the research.

I will all the best to you and your dream to become a Professor.

Hello Arun,

Thank you for choosing CareerGuide.com and writing to us. I am inspired reading up your query because I had the similar ambition while I was doing my bachelors degree. So I believe my experience would serve you to construct your career pathway. It is certainly appreciating to see you have developed interest in Professorship. This role is very challenging, responsible, reputable and demanding academic profession. As you are in your second year BTech now, you can very well start crafting the plans right from now.
To begin with, there are simple strategies that you may have to follow.

1. Btech pass with a high mark: To begin a career in teaching, it is essential to have a very good academic record in your BTech level. Although a 60% first class is considered minimum requirement for further study or teaching careers, it is essential to develop in-depth subject knowledge and get them reflected on your academic scores. So try aiming for a high percentage preferably above 70% in your BTech.

2. Participate in research, seminars: As a Btech student you can start engaging or attending research seminars organised at national level or state level in your subject. This will aid you in keeping yourself upto date in current trends in your subject.

3. Contribute to teaching at class: You may volunteer for conducting a lecture or seminar in your own class. I often did this while I was studying my BTech. I usually talk to my professor expressing my desire to teach a particular chapter the next day. I go home, prepare well and get to college the next day to offer my teaching to class. The more you make public appearance inside your own class, the better your presentation skills will be. This is also an ideal opportunity for you to improve teaching skills like body language, pace, eye contact.

4. Study a Masters degree: Completing BTech, you will have to follow up with an MTech degree. Completing the MTech, you can write and qualify either UGC NET/ UGC SET/ UGC LEC exams. Passing any one of these exams will qualify you to work as a Lecturer initially and after few years of work experience, you will be promoted to becoming an Assistant Professor or a Professor.

5. After an MTech, you can also study a PhD. To study a PhD, an MTech is most often mandatory. You are also required to write and qualify either of the exams UGC NET/ CSIR/ UGC JRF. Passing a PhD, you are eligible for direct Assistant Professor recruitment.

Dear Aspirant,

Glad to know that being in the second year of engineering, you have made up your mind to get into the teaching profession.

Minimum requirement for getting into the teaching industry is a Masters degree. Therefore, it is very essential that you extremely focus on your studies to learn it perfectly and also complete your ME or MTech from a good college with good grades.

After completing MTech / ME, you can then definitely approach the colleges with your CV and seek teaching positions in engineering colleges.

Best wishes
