Hello there!

Thank you for contacting us. I am Gomathi, a career counsellor practicing since 23 years. I am glad you are considering a creative career. I understand you are a girl and like photography. To answer your question, yes photography career is very much suitable for girls. The only disadvantage many girls find is, it involves a lot of travelling. But if you are girl, who loves travelling and meeting new people, this job is right for you.

I see you are seeking a career in photo journalism. Photo journalism falls into two divisions. One, photographers take photos for leading newspapers on the current issue happening in the country or around the world. This involves running to the issue spot that is happening on the day and taking pictures. There is other type of photo journalism and it is for magazines that write cover stories or stories on natural events, animals and birds. This internal divisions are called scenic photography, landscape photography, wildlife photography. These doesnt require the photographer to run to the spot as they will have prior notice to go the spots and take photographs. You should understand the demands the photo journalism career expectsfrom you. If you can meet such demands by attending to the spots on time and take photos, this is right for you. For these type of roles, you can expect a starting salary of 15000 per month initially and as your career grows, it increases with experience.

Alternatively I also suggest you consider other nice divisions in photography like Family photography, wedding photography. These type of photography could be done any time of the year and only when the clients asks you to attend specific dates. Like you know, weddings in India happen all round the year. You can be in a current job and pursue this wedding photography career part time. you can accept projects that has dates on weekends. If you dont want to work full time in a job and want to focus only on photography as a career, you can certainly do it still. This way you can accept all wedding photography assignments that comes to you through out the month and through out the year. A minimum pay these photographers receives per assignment ranges from 25000 to 30000. But they increase their fees as their experience increases and demand upto 1 lakh or even more.

All the best.

Hi,

Before i start telling you about the subject, i would like to you to know one important thing that no field is specific to any gender. In today's era, both genders can pursue any field they desire provided they are ready to face all hurdles and work very hard.

Photography is a wide artistic field, not every one can pursue it is only for those you have a nag for it and are very creative.

As you have shown interest in photo journalism, let me tell you this that it is one of themost difficult careers in photography field as it requires you as a girl to put in lot of hardwork facing too much hardship like working odd hours, travelling and capturing photos at weird locations.

Photo Journalism is divided into 2 sectors - Working for the newspaper or Working for a magazine.

When working for a newspaper you need to be prepared to travel a lot as you never know when and where shall you be sent to capture,

But if you work for a magazine life will be much easier compared to the above option as you might grab a project with a deadline and then you can work as you like without being rushed.

In a newspaper journalism you dont earn too much but where as in amagazine journalism you get paid per project and also incentives on the popularity of the project.

I will suggest you that for a lifetime experience you should try both for exposure and learning.

Best Wishes and hope to see some of your good work really soon.
