Below are the key areas on which an environmental engineer works most of the times:

1. The environmental engineer studies the environment and makes a number of observations. These observations have to be made with the right equipment and machines. For this purpose they have to travel to a particular location and make their observations at that location. They have to be extremely careful while doing this as a minor discrepancy in the observations can cause big troubles in their work later. They gather the data and maintain the records of it for the future purposes.

2. They have to derive the results based on the data that they have collected. This part is often done with the help of the software that they are using and requires great deal of analysis on their part. The right interpretation of the data is very important and equally important is the consideration of the various parameters that are affecting the processes. Thus they have to do all that on their computer and generate the reports after deriving the results.

3. The environmental engineers have to work on the manufacturing of the various machines and equipment that they have designed along with their team. These have been designed considering the environment and therefore are environment friendly in their operations. The engineers spend a lot of time in designing and in the production of these machines and equipment. They have to be careful at each stage of the production and it has to be foolproof. The quality assurance is also another responsible task for them during the production phase. Equally important is the sales and distribution of these machines and fixing the deals with the dealers.

4. The environmental engineers conduct workshops and seminars from time to time and make the general public aware about the harmful effects that they are causing on nature. Therefore educating others is another key area that they often work on. They also stay in touch with the media and often write educating articles in the journals and the magazines telling others about the environment.
