Have you ever wondered how much school actually costs across occupations? Well, you’ve come to the right place, because today we are going to be looking at the cost of schooling for six different occupations. For each position, we are going to examine the cost of living, books, tuition, required exams and any other potential costs. Keep in mind that there is quite a bit of variance depending on school, in-state vs out-of-state tuition and so on; therefore, these are just averages and not exact numbers

Architect

An architect has an important job, because they are in charge of overseeing the development of buildings. This includes the planning, design work, and construction oversight. To become an architect typically takes five years of schooling, with a paid internship lasting three years. The average cost to become an architect sits at around $120,000 for all five years. From there, future architects must pass six ARE exams and pursue their license. Overall, this brings the total to around $125,000 to become a licensed architect. 

Physician Assistant

A physician assistant performs many of the same tasks that a doctor performs. They carry out a number of clinical procedures, while having constant patient interaction. It takes a four-year bachelor degree in addition to a twenty seven month specialized program to become a physician assistant. On average, it costs around $180,000 for all six years of schooling. To take the required PANCE exam and gain a license tacks on roughly $1,000 more to the total. 

Massage Therapist

Massage therapists serve an important role, as they help patients alleviate pain, reduce stress, overcome injuries and more. A massage therapy program typically takes around six months to a year to complete. The tuition ranges, but on average it sits somewhere between $8,000 and $10,000. Additionally, certification is contingent upon passing the MBLEx exam, which costs around $200 to complete. In total, it usually costs less than $12,000 to become a massage therapist.

Data Analyst

You can find data analysts at nearly any business because they play such an important role. These professionals break down complex statistics and numbers into usable data to base decisions upon. To become a data analyst typically requires a four-year degree in statistics or business. Tuition, books and board typically costs around $100,000 for a data analyst. From there, no particular exams are usually required. 

Family Practitioner

Although the road to becoming a family practitioner is long, it can certainly be rewarding. These professionals work with a diverse base of patients on an everyday basis. This profession requires four years of undergraduate education, four years of medical school, and three years of paid residency. Becoming a doctor is an expensive process. First of all, it typically costs around $100,000 to $125,000 for an undergraduate degree. Additionally, medical school costs around $150,000 on average. In order to move on to medical school, prospective students must complete the MCAT, which on average will cost around $1,000. Once in medical school students must take three USMLE tests which cost around $3,000 total. 

Elementary School Teacher

Elementary school teachers have the important job of teaching and enriching the lives of the next generation of children. Typically, becoming an elementary school teacher requires a four-year college degree. The average cost associated with becoming a certified elementary school teacher is around $80,000 to $100,000 total. Teachers typically have to pass multiple tests depending on the state they want to teach in. This typically costs around $1,000.
