Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, a well-known Indian classical performer, founded the Mandal in 1901. Entrance exam
The ABGMVM conducts the entrance examination for admission to the various courses in the Indian classical music & dance. The entrance examination is conducted twice a year (April/May & November/December). The ABGMVM entrance examination is a written examination. The examination is divided into two parts. In Part I, candidates are tested on their knowledge of the basic principles of classical Indian music & dance (Swara, Laya, Raga, Tala, etc.). In Part II, candidates are tested for their knowledge of a particular instrument or form of dance. Qualifying marks for the ABGMVM entrance exam vary from course to course. Minimum qualifying marks are declared by the ABGMVM after the examination.

Supplementary exam
Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (ABGMVM) conducts supplementary exams for students who fail to pass an exam in the regular semester. The supplementary exams are usually held in the next semester.

The person will be re-evaluated by a panel of examiners designated by the ABGMVM.
