Dear friend, many thanks for your question. I am happy to reply through meracareer.com. Here you have not mentioned your academic qualifications. The physicist is a person who does research in physics and study range of physical phenomena. There are many sub disciplines or specialization of physics, such a particle physics, nuclear physics, applied physics, computational physics and many more. The progress of a person depends upon the academic qualifications, number of years of experience, and place of work.

The academic qualification could be master degree, doctoral degree or post doctral degree. A peron holding a degree of masters in Physics is also know as physicist. But he can be employed in research projects. The reason being is due to severe competition.

A person holding a doctoral degree in physics will have fair chance to get select as lecturer, assistant scientist or assistant professor. The place of work also matters, whether the person is working in colleges, universities or research institutions or governmental laboratories. In colleges and universities the entry level will be at lecturer or assistant professor. The physicist have to interact with students, colleagues, superiors and clients. He has to teach the students (graduates, post graduates, doctoral degree students). The progress of a person in academia also depends upon the number of classes taken per week, the classes taught (BSc, MSc or PhD). The number of research students (master degree and doctoral degree) guided.

Physicists
Along with these the physicist has to write research proposals to the funding agencies, after winning the projects, he or she has to recruit research fellows (senior research fellow or junior research fellow) to carry out the research work. He is also supposed to prepare the trimonthly, six monthly and yearly reports of the project proposal progress. Based on the results obtained he has to publish research papers in reputed journals. Along with this, how many review articles, book chapters, books written, books edited by him. All these parameters decides the progress of a physicist in any organization.

Along with these the physicist also work on organizing / attending / participating the international or national conferences, symposium, workshops and trainings. These all things are very important for a physicist to keep himself or herself update in the field.

Same process also goes for physicist working in research institutions or government laboratories.
With all my best wishes
Good Luck
