As a a Matehmatician, you will have different sort of works depending on what your profile is, where you are working etc. I am providing you a general idea of your day to day work as a Mathematician:

  • As a theoretical mathematician, you work on developing new theories, understanding existing theories and doing the experiements with them. This occupies most of the day for theoretical mathematicians. They work on computers checking the validity of these theories using different mathematical software.

  • On the other hand if you are working as an applied mathematician, you spend more time in testing the hypothesis. You will also develop various mathematical models that will be used by different technologists and engineers.
  • Mathematicians often get associated with the universities and take guest lectures there. This way they share their knowledge with young students and also get a chance to interact with the young enthusiasts.

  • Regardless of the industry you are working in, you will be working in teams only. As a team you will work on a particular model and provide your inputs on that.
  • At senior positions, you are also responsible for assigning tasks to the junior mathematicians and hiring of staff members.

  • Mathematicians also provide trainings to the junior staff.
  • Writing reports is again an important work which they have to do on almost daily basis.
  • Checking the emails and making the urgent communications.

Dear friend, an interesting question you have asked, a mathematician could be teacher, professor or scientist. The mathematician usually work in government organization, such as university, colleges and research institutes. The mathematician may be an academecian or a scintist busy in solving new equations.

As an academecian the mathematician has to be in constant touch with students (graduate, post graduate, or doctoral) colleagues, seniors and clients also. He is supposed to take classes on regular basis. The day usually starts with reading class notes. He has to deliver the lecture, answer the queries of the students in the class as well as out side the class. After class he usually rejuvenates himself or herself with a cup of tea or coffee.

Besides an academecian, he is also a researcher, he is also supposed to guide post graduate and doctoral degree students. If he is guideing a student, then regular monitoring of research work is necessary. In mathematics, the research part is derivation of equations and development of new steps.

Mathematician

On the basis of new steps, and new equations, the mathematician write research papers and submited to the national or international journals. The publications are integrated part of the job, this is required to get promotion in the career. Besides, teaching and research the mathematican has to do departmental activities, such as looking after exams, quality control, member of students welfare committee. These activities along with regular meetings with colleagues and seniors are part of job of a methmatician. THe writing of research propoals,\ to the funding agencies and winning and then its execution and finally publucation of report or research papers is very important job aof a mathematician. The results of the research proposals are also discussed in the department with colleagues.

Mathematician

The mathematician is also supposed to organize or to participate in international or national conferences, workshops, symposium and trainings. This is the only platform where a mathematicain finds an opportunity to meet the like minded people. This is an opportunity where you can meet people of your choice to make research collaborations.

The planning and meetings with students and colleagues to organize such academic events is time consuming and one has plant very meticulously to make the event successful. Any time any colleague from other department may also drop to discuss some office problem or for general chit chat. A mathematicin is also a socila animal, where his offcial schedule keeps him busy.

I beleive that as a mathematican you willa also enjoy your job.

Good luck..
