hi

Fatehsahi

I want to pursue Masters in Engineering abroad. I may even get a scholarship for the same. But my parents don't agree. What should I do?

I have always wanted to do something of great value in the field of engineering. Pursuing a masters abroad brings me closer to this goal. My current government job does provide me adequate livelihood but I do not feel I will be able to make a huge difference for me, my family or the society at large if I stay in this job. I have excellent academics and 1.5 years of work experience. My parents suggest that I complete my Masters in IIT Delhi on part time basis while being in the job and later go for a PhD abroad. This way I will get time to think, experience research atmosphere in IIT and save some money as well. They also intend to marry me before I go abroad which will be possible only in 2017 or 2018 if I get into a Masters program at IIT. What do you suggest? Should I go for Masters Abroad now or in 2017/18 ? Based on that I had to take some investment decisions as well. PS: Reason behind going abroad is better research facilities, better academic environment and ofcourse better value for your work. And I will be doing what I love, i.e. research.

Hello there,
Thanks for consulting careerguide.com

I am also happy to see that you have yourself got all the reasons laid down as to how a research abroad will help you in your career.

If you are so clear in your head as to what you want and are clear with your goals and vision, why are you unable to reason out with your parents?
Isn't clarification or rather reasoning a part of research.

It would be better, if you could sit across the table and reason out with them, the reason why they are saying you not to go abroad, and you can counter reason them for your benefits to go abroad.

Only reason I can see is because they are a bit insecure.

Since you do know and understand that Research is a lengthy process and someone so career focused like you, will definitely strive harder to get better and accurate results ignoring the time limit.

These days a premier institute like IIT has developed very well the concept of Research and well known scientists from abroad are coming down to India for their research, reason being cost effective and availability of cheaper resources.
In-case you are unable to convince your parents, it would be better, not to waste time and get involved with a masters program from IIT.
If you are really good at your work as you have put it above, your good luck that your mentor itself would recommend you abroad for further research.
And at the same time, even if that does not happen atleast you have initiated the process.

Go on and think stably.
Rather than waiting, it is better to begin sailing and watch out for the coastline.
Wish you good luck..............
