Good to hear you are working on an MIS profile and have decided to do an MBA to stabilize your career. Doing the MBA is definitely a worth decision especially if you have built up some years of work exp.I believe you mean MIS as management of information systems? MIS is actually a work profile that involves 50% of technical work in information management and 50% of pure management work. So it is a mixture of technology and management. studying a general MBA or the MBA in Information management/ systems management will be a great choice for you. There are very few schools in India that offers the MBA with information or systems management however the branded b schools most often doesnt offer a specialization in this area. But then you can still go ahead with doing the regular MBA and specialise in project management or operations management and work in software companies. This is indeed a wise route that is often recommended.

PGDBA/ MBA?
I often see people getting confused over the degree names PGDBA and the MBA. PGDBA is abbreviated as a post graduate diploma in business and management. But honestly there is not any difference between the PGDBA/ PGDM/ or the MBA. All means the same and it is only the preference by the college to name their degrees. For example, all the IIM's name their business degree as Post graduate program and not as post graduate diploma so you can see their degrees named as PGPM often. However the IIT's name their business degree as the MBA itself and the ISB Hyderabad also name it as MBA.
Some private colleges only gave it a name as PGDM/ PGDBM. In sum, all are the same with no difference. However it is wise to study at a reputed b school to ensure you have a stable career.

Reputed B schools:
IIM Ahmedabad
IIM Bangalore
ISB Hyderabad
IIM Calcutta
IIM Lucknow
IIM Indore
IIM Khozhiode
IIT Delhi school of management
IIT Kharagpur Vinod Gupta school of management
IIT Bombay Shailesh Mehta school of management
IIT Madras department of management studies
IIT Roorkee management department
Faculty of management studies FMS New Delhi, University of Delhi
Tata institute of social sciences TISS Mumbai
SP Jain institute of management
XLRI
Symbiosis school of management
IMT Ghaziabad
Wellingkar school of management Mumbai

Admission tests:
The following tests are required to do the PGPM/ MBA

All the IIM - CAT exam
All the IIT - GATE exam or CAT exam
ISB Hyderabad - only GRE or GMAT. They dont accept CAT/ GATE or any other tests
XLRI - XAT exam
All the other schools - usually accepts CAT or may conduct their own tests.

Finally I would advice you to do the MBA/ PGPM/ PGDBM in Information systems management or the regular MBA with project management or operations management and then join a IT service company.

Good luck.

Dear Aspirant,

Thanks for approaching us at CareerGuide.

Legally PGDBA, PGDM, PGDBM are not masters degree. They are equivalent only in their course structure. PGDM or PGDBM is not always eligible for PhD or for appearing for UGC NET / SET.
PGDBA is a distance learning management course and not a Masters degree.

Master degree holders are preferred over PGD in teaching field. However in corporate, it doe snot matter.
Legally mentioning MBA as a qualification is not allowed for a person having PGDBA or PGDBM or PGDM.

IIMs award PG Diplomas and not MBA at all.

Only Institutes / Universities under the AIU recognition are allowed to give PGDBM or PGDM as MBA degree.
