The key areas on which the industrial engineers work most of the times have been mentioned below.

1. Industrial engineers work on the planning part of various industrial processes that need to be implemented. That requires them to arrange meetings with the senior management team and work with them to figure out the right plan and the future course of action. This requires brain storming sessions and repeated discussions before the plan gets approved by the management.

2. They have to do a lot of research and data analysis in order to figure out the information behind the processes. They use that data later in the various processes. They collect the data samples in the industrial settings and do it carefully so that there is no discrepancy in the data that has been collected.

3. The industrial engineers have to work on the tools such as mathematical and statistical tools so that they can do their analysis and later the calculations on the same. They have to figure out the right approach in order to solve those lengthy calculations. Therefore they have to be really good at understanding of the maths. They work on computer software to figure out the optimal solution for the problem.

4. They have to go to the factory and work with the workers so that the plan could be implemented the way it was supposed to be. There should not be any issues regarding the implementations of the plan. They need to guide the workers and assist them at every step. They have to divide the task among various employees and give them the instructions. They also need to ensure that the work is right on progress.

5. The industrial engineers need to do a lot of documentation work. They are involved in purchasing the raw materials and other machinery stuff for the industrial purposes. They need to maintain the records for that. Otherwise also they need to maintain the written record of all the activities and tasks that have been completed and are going on. Thus they work on that too.

The key areas on which every industrial engineer works most of the times are :-

Industrial engineer design better methods and facilities for manufacturing and services. He studies the various industrial processes involved, uses mathematical models and computer simulation to devise new manufacturing system that are more efficient.

In an actual plant design , an industrial engineer figures out which computer systems, machines and automated equipment will be used in the design and manufacturing process. He has to determine the most effective layout for computers, equipment and offices such that it is flexible and easily maintainable. He is also required to develop wage and salary administration systems and job evaluation programs.

One of the major challenges an industrial engineer faces is automating a production process. He is required to first determine what aspect of production needs to be automated and if it makes financial sense.

When new projects come up, an industry is usually involved in it from start to finish. He determines the suitability of locations for factories depending on the best combination of raw material availability, transportation and costs.

An Industrial engineer must also understand ergonomics ( which seeks to adapt working conditions to suit their worker) and consider how the machines and work environment affect the worker. He is expected to design workstations to reduce fatigue and prevent discomfort and work related injuries.

He will also have to work out the best possibility system for handling and storage of raw material, setting inventory size as well as packaging and the physical distribution of goods and services

Industrial engineer usually spends a lot of time in his office poring over papers and meeting heads of various departments. They visit the production plant to supervise installation of newequipment and ensuring that production flows smoothly

Much of an industrial engineer's output is used by management for making decisions. The recommendations of an industrial engineer may affect the size of a firm's profits, its labor relations as well as its production costs. In many ways , he is the bridge between management goals and operational performance.
