things to learn by psychiatrist for achieving success
Good day,
Thank you for reaching Mear Careerguide.com
If you are already a Psychiatrist but thinking of developing more skills to help you, then Iam very sure you would have had few or many different experiences which would have helped you understand what to be and what you should not be. But if you are still a student then I am glad you are giving a thoughtful process.
To Become a Psychiatrist, a student must complete four years of college, Four years of medical school and three or more years of internship and residency. Yet, Medical knowledge is just one of the skills a good Psychiatrist needs. He/She must be able to communicate effectively on many levels with many different people, Know when to listen and when to question and how to pull it all together to derive a diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for various mental disorders.
Below are few suggestions:
1. Excellent Diagnostic skills
Psychaitrist must be able to analyse a patient's comments, symptoms and results against the vast store of knowledge he gained in medical school to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan. This requires not only a great deal of information recall but also the ability to reason, priortise and group responses to derive individual solutions. Understanding human biology, Psycholgy, Group and Individual and cultural differences all play in his/Her ability to accurately diagnose the patient's illness.
2. Good Listening Skills
A Pyschiatrist must be an avid and capable listener to hear both what the patient says and discern what is not said. He needs to pay attention to the intonation and expression the patient uses when discussing issues and to be alert to repetitive comments that may indicate strong feelings. It's Important too that the Psychiatrist be able to set aside his/Her preconceptions and be open to what each patient is saying and how can one patient differs from another. He should be an active listener, who listens without interrupting but knows when to ask appropriate questions.
3. Ability to communicate well
A Psychiatrist needs to be able to communicate with many people in addition to the patient. He/She may talk to family members to get other perspective on the patient's problems and to assess family dynamics. He must talk with other health care professional to Co-ordinate a treatment plan for the patient. A Spychiatrist must be able to explain specific medical terminology to other medical professionals as well as to lay people who may have limited medical knowledge. He takes notes throughout these various conversations and Places comments in the patients file for future reference, So a good command of both oral and written language is essential.
4. Empathy without internalizing
To be effective a Psychiatrist must care about his patient's and have empathy for their problems. While he/She may not have personally experienced similar problems himself/Herself. He/She needs to be able to understand them to analyse and determine treatment plans.Yet Listening to other poeple's problems can be stressful. The Psychaitrist must be able to detach himself/Herself wnough to avoid taking on patients stress and Emotional Upheaval.
Hope this good help you in many ways.
