Dr. Shankar Goenka (Shankar) is Country Head at WOW Factors India Pvt. Ltd. He is an educationist with more than 10 years of experience and his aim is to help individuals understand their thinking preferences and the implications, so they can make personal and professional decisions that result in increased performance, productivity, satisfaction and Tolerance. He speaks about his career and career counselling in an interview with Amarjeet.

Amarjeet Sharma (AS): Please brief us about your Educational background.

Shankar: I’ve studied at Birla School Pilani and thereafter Sydenham College, Bombay. Certified Practitioner of Neethling Brain Instruments (NBI), South Africa, Trained by AIMA.

AS: What has your time as a Career Counsellor meant to you personally and why?

Shankar: Career Counselling is what life is all about. Career Guidance is a beginning of a child’s new future and a new life altogether. 90% of us have studied what we don’t practice and what we practice we have never studied.

AS: How did you get into Career Counselling? What interested you into Career Counselling?

Shankar: After handling 19 factories for 16 years I realized that I am not made for Industries so left them and became an Educator.

AS: Which tools do you use for guiding careers?

Shankar: Neethling Brain Instruments, South Africa which works in 35 Countries and in 19 languages.

AS: Why do you think it’s important for students and parents to undergo Career Counselling together?

Shankar: that they enjoy what they study and they practice the needful in their personal & professional life. 

AS: What are the top 3-5 skills you should have to become an effective Career Counsellor?

Shankar: 

  • Good Listener
  • Experience of Educating
  • Coaching
  • Exposure

AS: What is your advice for newbies, who are looking at building a career in Career Counselling industry?

Shankar: Be patient, study all new and upcoming courses and have hands on experience.

AS: There are many new career options that have come up over the last decade which was not heard of before, how do you stay updated on the latest trends in Career?

Shankar: I read a lot from different online and offline sources whereas networking with eminent educationists, policy makers; these keep me updated with all new and upcoming courses.

AS: Which are the Career Information resources (i.e. newsletters/ blogs/ websites/ apps) you visit regularly?

Shankar: I often read e-news, and go through career blogs and discussions on various websites.
