If someone is really keen to make a career in microbiology , then a master;'s degree in microbiology is must. Microbiology is a diverse discipline with almost limitless application sin health, industry, biotechnology , environmental science and basic research. With the increase in emerging infectious disease and antibiotic resistance , the threat of bio terrorism , the rapid advances in biotechnology and numerous environmental problems , microbiologists are in higher demand than ever. There are various specializations which one can take up during post graduate studies. Depending upon their area of specialization their work areas may be:-
Research Assistant- These people provide technical support to conduct research working in a team with other scientists and research director.
Medical Microbiologist- study the role played by micro organisms in inflicting diseases in humans and animals
. They research these organisms to find various ways to cure , prevent and occurrence o these diseases.
Marine Microbiologists- Works on the microscopic organism from seas and oceans. These microorganism include bacteria, viruses protozoa, algae , yeasts , fungi and plankton. Oceans and seas harbor very diverse microbial flora and fauns and study about this field in detail.
Food and dairy Microbiologists- The try to prevent spoilage of food and the transmission of food borne diseases such as botulism and salmonelosis. They also use micro organism to make food such as cheese , yogurt , single cell protein , pickles, wine and beer
Agricultural Microbiologist- study plant diseases , the role of microorganism sin soil fertility and damage of farm products
Industrial Microbiologists- work with industries manufacturing products like antibiotics , amino acids, beverages etc.
Microbial ecologists- study the relationship between micro organisms and their habitats. They are concerned with the contribution of microorganisms to the carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles in soil and in fresh water.
Public Health Microbiologists- tries to control the spread of communicable diseases. They often monitor community food establishments and water supplies in an attempt to keep them safe and free from infectious disease agents.
