Hi Vivek,

Congratulations you have decided on one of the toughest and the most challenging career

I am sure you are aware IAS, is a part of the Civil Service examination conducted by the UPSC.

As such Civil Service exams are divided into 3 rounds. Namely, Prelims, which is the objective kind of questions asked, which is generally conducted around august, followed by Mains, which is the theory paper, conducted around December.
This is the main subject paper, whereby the subject that you select, it can be any subject of your choice from a list of subjects approved which you will find on their website. The subject you choose, you must have an in-depth information, just from the scratch to their current happenings, research done, their gurus etc.
This is followed by an Interview. Once you clear the main exam, then shortlisted candidates are called for the interview. round.
Generally here they are interested in your reasoning capacity and your sense of humor.

Preparations are the important part of clearing the exam. Apart from joining classes, other factors important are:

  • General Awareness: For this reading is very very important. Daily newspapers, magazines, brochures, Manorama year book and any material you can pout your hand to, must be read till the end.
  • Expressing: Just reading and verbalising it will not help. Important here is to be able to express them in your own words, being humorous and diplomatic, but stating facts supported with reasons
  • Reasoning: Every talk, every subject you discuss, do njot go in-depth, but try and reason out everytime. This may sound boring or offensive to people, but to clear your interview, Reasoning is one important criteria
  • Political Awareness: Though it is unsaid since you are appearing for competitive exam mainly for government services, but please make a note, general awareness and political awareness is different. You need to be having a good memory concerning historical events. So reading such matters is also essential
