Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis , interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data.

Statistics collect, verify and interpret data and use the same to solve problems in wide variety of fields . Statisticians make use of various methods like questionnaires, surveys and diagnostics test to understand real life problems a wide range of fields like biology, economics, engineering, medicine, physics, sociology and psychology.They collect data from reliable sources , evaluate it using scientific methods, make use of statistical tools and present their findings in the form of graphs, charts , tables etc. On the basis of their findings they suggest potential applications of the results of their survey and help to find solutions to the problem at hand. They determine whether the existing information is adequate or additional information is required. Then they summarize the information in a useful and informative manner , analyze the available information and finally draw conclusions and make inferences while assessing the risk of an incorrect conclusion. Some of the fields in which statisticians work are crime statistics, census statistics, ecological statistics, medical statistics, statistics on job seekers, film statistics, cricket statistics, market statistics, accident statistics, population statistics , election statistics, state statistics, tourism statistics etc. In all these areas statisticians interpret numerical data and explain to the public what the numbers mean and how it can be beneficial.

To become a professor of statistics an aspirant needs to have post graduation in statistics followed by PhD. After 10+2 with maths, a student can do an undergraduate course in statistics. Usually the selection to the course in eminent institutes is through an entrance test. Some of the institutes offering an education in statics are :-
