Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deal with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data.

Statisticians collect , verify and interpret data and use the same to solve problems in a wide variety of fields. Statisticians make use of various methods like questionnaire, surveys and diagnostics tests to study real life problems in a broad range of disciplines like biology , economics , engineering, medicine , physics , sociology and psychology. They collect data from reliable sources, evaluate it using scientific methods , make use of statistical tools and present their findings in the form of graphs , chart, tables etc. Some of the various areas in which statistician work are : Crime statistics, census statistics, ecological statistics, medical statistics, statistics on job- seekers , film statistics , cricket statistics, market statistics, accident statistics, population statistics, election statistics, state statistics, tourism statistics etc. In all these areas statistician interpret numerical data and explain to the public what the number mean and how it can beneficial.A qualified statistician will find job opportunities in public sector organizations , financial institutions and in private companies. Colleges and universities employ statisticians for teaching , statistical research and consulting. The other reputed organizations employing statisticians include planning commission, the national council of applied economic research , institute of applied manpower research , Indian council of medical research , institutions associated with sociology economic research etc. The graduation in statistics as the first degree qualifies a person for the like armed forces , civil services etc. The insurance industry provides lot of employment to graduates of statistics. Indian statistical Service- this is for those who are interested in having a career with the government. A master's degree is required. Statistics jobs in India exist in the capacities of data interpreters, data analysts and statisticians. Many of the scholars completing statistics courses in India are appointed by educational and research institutes in India and abroad. Statisticians are employees as lecturers, assistant professors or research scholars/ officers/ assistants.
