Hello there,

Thank you for choosing Meracareerguide and writing to us. Psychology is an interesting science dealing with human behaviour. One could be able to be placed in jobs according to the type of Psychology course/ branch of Psychology they have studied. Having said that, I can brief you on the type of roles you can work on with each branch of Psychology. For better illustration, see the picture below.

Psychologist

The picture above shows all branches in Psychology however students in India are likely to study only a few branches from the above table like: Clinical psychology, School/ educational psychology/ Consumer psychology/ Industrial or organizational psychology/ Health psychology and Counselling Psychology. Of all these, Clinical psychology, Industrial/ organisational psychology and Counselling psychology are the most common choices and destinations for Psychology students.

However I shall brief about the roles and work responsibilities of the branches available in India as mentioned above.
1. Clinical psychology - It is a study of science that combines behavioural and clinical knowledge. Completing this course you can work in hospitals and clinical labs, where you deal with patients at clinical settings to remove their distress or psychological dysfunctions. You need to have compulsorily studied clinical psychology course and obtained certification/ license to be able to handle patients in clinical labs.

2. School psychology - It is also known as educational psychology. In this branch you are employed in educational sector like schools and colleges to develop curriculum as per students learning interests. You conduct research examination on studying children to understand their learning behaviour and help these students overcome learning issues by effective counselling.

3. Consumer psychology - It is a new branch evolved in India and more popular in marketing. MBA students would have studied this module if they had studied marketing. You will be employed in marketing divisions to understand how customers prefer, select and buy products.

4. Industrial/ organisational psychology - This is yet a new science that understands behaviour of employees within a company and MBA students who have studied Organizational behaviour would also study this branch of Psychology. It also understands how employees get stressed, motivated, demotivated with work situations.

5. Counselling psychology - It involves many branches and you will be employed accordingly like - family counselling, relationship counselling, rehabilitation counselling, adult counselling, child counselling and many.

6. Health psychology - Lastly, this study understands how different psychology behaviour causes impact on health. It is again more to work with hospital settings.

Hope this briefing helps. Please write back if you require further help.

Thanks.

Dear Aspirant,

Your job role depend upon your specialization. It is tough to get desired job after graduation. Since graduation is general study, you would get generic job. Postgraduate study is required to work in the specialized field. Psychology has specialization in following area:
Clinical Psychology: After MPhil in clinical psychology, often work with hospital for mental health hospital, private clinics, NGOs or have own clinical practice.

Those who have MA/MSc, often work in development sector, counseling centres, health projects.

Counseling Psychology: After MA/MSc, they often work in NGOs, counseling centres, schools.

Industrial Psychology: They work in corporate or NGO sector in the domain of HR, employee counseling, recruitment, training and development.

May psychology post graduate (irrespective of their specialization) work in Research Associate, Temp. Lecturer, Assistance Professor after qualifying NET.

Hope your query is answered. Feel free to revert back if you have more queries.

Best Wishes,
Apurva Kumar Pandya, PhD
