What is Merchant Navy?

Merchant Navy offers commercial services, unlike the Navy that offers defence services. It is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo and delivering goods from one country to another with adventurous sea travelling.

Responsibilities of Merchant Navy Officer

A merchant navy officer works either in the deck or the engineering department. The specific responsibilities depend on the exact rank. Some responsibilities can include:

  • Monitor and maintain safety and security at the ship.
  • Regularly check the weather and navigation reports.
  • Supervise the ship’s operation and take appropriate actions if required.
  • Coordination of safe and proper loading and unloading of goods without causing any damage and storing them properly.
  • Maintain legal and operational records of all the activities taking place onsite or offsite of the ship.
  • Navigation of the vessels using a wide range of satellites and radar systems.

Education and Eligibility

  • Completion of 10+2 in science stream with physics, chemistry and mathematics as requisites with 60% aggregate.
  • Pursue bachelor in marine engineering by qualifying popular entrance exams like IMU CET, JEE Advanced, MERI Entrance Exam, TMI SAT.
  • There are two diploma courses. Diploma Course of 1 year after completion of 10+2. The other diploma is of 2 years which requires candidates to complete diploma courses in Electronics or Marine or Mechanical or Shipbuilding or Electrical Engineering with minimum 50% marks.
  • Completion of class 10th with a minimum of 40% aggregate and aspirants can pursue 6 months merchant navy courses.
  • For admission into post-graduate courses like MBA requires aspirants to possess a bachelor degree from any recognized university. And for GME, aspirants should have a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering.
