To score higher on the IELTS, it is important to have a good understanding of the test format and to practice regularly. Listening:

  • Prior to taking the test, listen to radio programmes, lectures, English news channels such as BBC World or CNN.
  • Watch films, read educational English magazines and analyze online videos having a proficient level of English content.
  • Acquaint yourself with the different types of questions that could be asked in the listening round such as matching, labelling and multiple choice type questions
  • Instructions are not printed in the test booklet hence make sure to listen to the audio instructions before each section prudently.
  • Pay close attention to the number of words required for each answer, in the event of the words exceeding the limit, you will lose marks
  • Read the questions before listening and mark the keywords. Only 30 to 60 seconds are given for reading the questions and instructions.
  • Do pay attention to the synonyms and paraphrases, try to imagine the situation and answer the questions.
  • Especially, look out for any negatives (not, never, no one, barely, scarcely)
  • After each section, you get a 30-second pause, revise your answers during this time.
  • Transfer your answers from the test booklet onto the answer sheet during the 10-minute time, try your best to answer all the questions even if you have doubts.
  • Revise your answers to check for any grammatical or spelling errors.

Speaking:

  • Read books, watch English movies and television shows and listen to the radio. While reading, watching or listening, try to speak along and think about why you like or dislike it.
  • Try speaking to other people in English, make it your preferred mode of communication.
  • Do not get flustered or intimidated by the examiner and try to keep your responses detailed and articulate.
  • In lieu of worrying about your vocabulary or grammar, concentrate on your fluency and stay confident.
  • Request the examiner to repeat the question or clarify your doubts if you have a query.
  • Connect with the examiner through your words rather than body language, try not to overuse gestures and in case you make a mistake, humbly correct it.
  • Use neutral or semi-neutral language and try to stick to the topic.

Writing:

  • For both, Academic as well as General Training module, look for model IELTS essays online and analyze them in terms of task response, vocabulary, essay structure, sentence variety and coherence.
  • Carefully underline the keywords while examining the question and use your own words, do not make use of task words in your writing.

For The IELTS Academic Module:

  • Understand the essay question in its entirety as to what it needs you to do. Does it need you to give solutions to a present-day problem, to compare or contrast or to express your general opinion on something?
  • Your priority being quality over quantity, the essay should be limited to 350 words only.
  • Set aside at least 3 minutes for revising Writing Task 1 and at least 5 minutes for revising your essay.

For The IELTS General Training Module:

  • Plan and structure your essay/letter and do not jump straight to write it.
  • In Writing Task 1, limit your writing to 200 words but remember that 150 words are a must whereas in Writing Task 2, there should be at least 250 words and shouldn’t cross the 350 marks.
