Marketing people switch jobs frequently. Their functions remain more or less the same but the domain or the industry changes. So should a sales person stick to one particular domain? Its because if he changes his industry quite often then it looks bad on the resume. Secondly if he decides to go on for an non marketing role at some point in his life then in which domain he should choose to work?
Dear Nilesh,
Yours is a very valid and true scenario query.
Firstly, I would suggest that it is not a compulsion for a marketing person to stick to a particular domain. However if a person spends substantial years in a particular marketing domain, then he should not choose to shift from industry to industry. For example, a marketing person having served in banking sector, may not get suited for marketing a manufacturing product.
It is fine to shift from within the industry. Like from one manufacturing company to another or from one service company to another, but cross shifting will be difficult. In the long term, a marketing person remaining in the same domain definitely helps.
According to my experience, for a marketing person to change to a non-marketing role is difficult and industry does not give a chance to work may be in Finance or HR or International Business, etc. because of lack of experience, qualification and knowledge.
Best wishes!
Hi There,
Pretty interesting question and very much relevant to the marketing sector.
Mostly employees in the Marketing sector, carry on with a domain, because they start as a Sales person and to settle as a Marketing manager takes few years, so if they shift before only, they loose their promotion and may have to begin all over again.
Mostly people in the marketing segment, do not opt for a domain change as such, since it becomes a little difficult for them with their experience. Mostly we see them working as a Business Development executive later on.
Hope this helps
Wish you good luck....
