A hostel is a place, where you discover a great sense of how’s everything needs to be explored. If you’re someone who had experienced the hostel life or someone who wants to experience it, this is the perfect place for you. I will take you on a journey where you get to know what the hostels are? What should be the complete guide for packing your bags to grab a hostel room? Or even if you are someone who is missing your hostel life, just like I am, due to this pandemic situation. Let’s bang on!

“Let’s clean this sandwich plate once we get back to the hostel after Holi vacations…” It was decided mutually between me and my friends while we were playing cards in the hostel room. But who knew that at that time the sandwich plate doesn’t want to be cleaned up and, our lives would be crumped up by the Covid pandemic.

We came home for Holi vacations and still bagged up in our houses, praying to get back to those half-sized hostel rooms and relive all those memories, which are getting faded away.

You must have seen the Bollywood movie, Chhichhore, that picturizes the hostel life in a cool fashion. Well, let’s start from the start…

What is a hostel?

A place where you live with strangers, far away from your parents, and structuring your life the way you want it to be. When I mentioned strangers, I mean it, as you don’t even know who the person is sitting right next to you, or maybe your roommate. But eventually, you try to find out the nature and behavior of them and figure out with whom you can share your cup of tea or with whom you should be raging apart.

DIY: Do It Yourself, is the famous proverb we all know, but at home do we apply it? Not, your mom or your dad must have been doing things for you. Let’s say you need to go to your cousins’ marriage, the shirt and pants will be pressed up by your mom, but not you. Here, in a hostel, the scene is upside down. You have to do everything by yourself, whether pressing your uniform or fixing your broken shoe, arranging the cupboard, or washing your clothes on a weekend. Even for rushing to classes in the morning, you need to put up an alarm by your side, else tune up with your roommate to wake you up as your mom won’t be there to pull up that blanket. By reading this, hostel life seems to be rude, but that’s not the actual case. Believe it or not, hostel life is the best phase of life. When you compare the pros with cons, the cons seem to be just a drop in front of the ocean of pros.

Pros & Cons

You cherish a hell of a lot of memories, struggle to stand on your belongings, learn how to tackle situations, learn how to make friends and find out the true ones, develop late-night study habits, end-time notes, buttering up the annoying professors, and respecting them may be passive.

If you’re someone who never took part in any of the sport and, fears being on the stage, hostel life secretively allows you to overcome those. Take part in as many co-curricular activities and there’s no one to restrict you, with this, you can gear up yourselves to become the best version of yourself. I hardly find any con, but yep, your schedule becomes home. Also, while you are living your life on your own, your parents worry for you. But calling them regularly solves this issue as well.

So, these are a few of the pros that I have mentioned, which you should explore by yourselves. But for that, you need to first enter it. The below sections is for those who are soon going to be a part of the hostel family.

Let’s Pack The Essentials!

Firstly, when you’re going to settle in a hostel, learn how to start learning. The time is gone when your mentors or parents will teach you, how things are gonna be or so. Now is your way to deal with unknowing situations. Sort out timings according to your convenience. Plan the schedule that suits you the most.

Pack smartly – padlocks, earplugs, masks, tissue papers, chargers, are a must. Always keep a pocketbook with yourself, to note down, whenever or wherever you remember something. Once you are done, just go with the flow!

A small piece of advice is, “Not to rush and also to not to sedate.” There will be times when you will get off-tracked, in these situations you should not panic instead, you should take your parent’s advice.

Sum Up

You are a grown-up now, start handling your things by yourself, that’s what hostels teach us. So learn it and be calm. I know all this because I have been through that phase and, I hope this article would have helped you to get a brief idea. You should read other pieces as well.
