It's a great thing that you are considering the research as a career option. India despite having expertise in Computer Engineering field still has a lot to work on the research and innovation. There's a lot of scope out there if you are willing to work. You can opt for either of three options for your research:

Educational Institutions:

IISc Bangalore remains one of the most preferred destination for Computer Science research. And of course we have IITs. Getting in to them for Masters degree will require a healthy GATE score. They also conduct interview after which the admission is confirmed. If you are unable to make it to the IITs, you can also go for NITs and other top Engineering institutes.

Government Funded Institutions:

TIFR and Institute for Mathematical Science conduct a lot of research. ISRO, National Aerospace Laboratories, NCST and defense related fields ofetn need researchers in this field. The scope and quality of work is very high in this case.

Industrial/Private Labs:

TRDDC supported by Tata Group and SSF supported by SPIC, a petrochemical corporation are nice examples. If you are ready to work in competitive environment then this is the right option for you. It pays you well too.

Many companies have launched there Labs too and are offering nice opportunities to young students. Some of these companies are - Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Texas Instruments.
