Statistics is a vast field and there are numerous career opportunities in this field. Considering the application of statistics in almost all sphere of manufacturing and service industry, we don't see any saturation of jobs for in the times to come. the nature of work that a statistician performs depends upon his field of work :-

Business- Today's business statisticians are in the thick of their company initiatives to build products that delight customers and to increase market share and profitability. Their involvement is holistic and runs from product conception to field deployment.

Colleges and universities- statisticians are needed for teaching, statistical research, consulting, psychological testing , guidance and counseling. Academic and research statistician are concerned with the training of students and statistical research in a chosen specialized field.

Industry- Statistician are involved in checking the quality of items manufactured, in product development , improvement and marketing. In addition they do testing , they are also involved in deciding the product to manufacture, how much to charge for them and to whom the product should be marketed.

Government operations and surveys- statisticians working with the government departments conduct experiments on consumer prices, fluctuations in the economy, employment patterns, population trends etc and aid in the development of public policy and legislation. Statistician collect information from a carefully specified sample and extend the results to an entire population.

A statistician can find employment in public sector organizations, financial institutions and in private companies. Colleges and universities also hire statisticians for teaching, statistical research and consulting.

The other organizations that recruits statisticians include planning commission, the national council for applied economic research, institute of applied manpower research, Indian council for medical research, institutions associated with sociology- economic research etc. The insurance industry offers a lot of employment opportunities to statisticians.
