Hello,

For becoming a chartered accountant one has to undergo a professional course which is recognized by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The course structure is as follows:

1) Common Proficiency Course (CPC) / Common Proficiency Test (CPT)

CPT is an entry level examination for Chartered Accountancy Course. Student after passing senior secondary (10+2) examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the central government as equivalent thereto. Students after registration to the course are required to complete specified period (i.e. 60 days) from the date of registration to as on first day of the month in which the examination is to be held, i.e. students registered on or before 1st April/ 1st October will be eligible to appear in June / December examination, as the case may be.

CPT is 200 marks examination which have following subjects:

Session - I
Fundamentals of accounting (60marks)
Mercantile Law (40markes)

Session - II
General Economics (50 Marks)

Quantitative aptitude (50 Marks)

Passing marks criteria is minimum 30% marks in each section /Session and a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all sections / sessions, subject to the principle of negative marking.

2) Intermediate (Integrated Professional Competence) Course (IPC/IPCC)

(a) Student becomes eligible for IPC in following cases:
> Passing CPT or
> Intermediate level examination passed students of Cost Accountant Course or Company Secretary Course or
> Graduates or Post Graduates in Commerce securing 55% marks of any three papers of 100 marks each out of Accounting, Auditing, Mercantile Law, Corporate Law, Economics, Financial Management, Taxation, Costing, Business Administration from recognized university or
> Graduates or post graduates students of stream other that commerce securing 60% of the total marks from recognized university

(b) One has to undergo 8 months of Study course before appearing for IPC/ IPCC exam & to complete 8 months of practical training under a Chartered accountant

(c) Following are the subjects:

Group - I
Accounting (100 marks)
Business Law, Ethics & Communication (100 marks)
Cost Accounting & Financial Management (100 marks)
Taxation - Income Tax & Service Tax (100 marks)

Group - II
Advanced Accounting (100 marks)
Auditing & Assurance (100 marks)
Information Technology and strategic management (100 marks)

(d) One has to pass both groups either individually or together. Passing marks are 40% in each subject and minimum of 50% marks of all subjects taken together.

3) Training

(a) One has to complete 100 hours of training for Information Technology before joining practical training mentioned in point 2 (b)

(b) One has to undergo orientation programme of 35 hours practical training mentioned in point 2 (b)

4) Final Course

(a) After completing above three one becomes eligible for final course examination. Following are the subjects:

Group - I
Financial Reporting (100 marks)
Strategic Financial Management (100 marks)
Advanced Auditing and professional ethics (100 marks)
Corporate ans Allied Laws (100 marks)

Group - II


Advanced Management Accounting (100 marks)
Information Systems Control and Audit (100 marks)
Direct Tax Laws (100 marks)
Indirect Tax Laws (100 marks)

(b) One has to compete 3 years of practical training under a Chartered Accountant (which includes 8 months of training mentioned in point 2 (b) above )

(c) Passing marks for final exam is the same as mentioned in point 2 (d).

5) General Management & communication skill course (GMCS):

(a) However, on gets job after passing CA final exam, but to get membership & certificate of practice from ICAI when has to complete GMCS. It is basically a course where senior CA's guides new CA's about the industry & career pathway of CA's. They also show the correct direction depending on the aspirations of the new CA's. Its more like a very healthy dialogues & conversation programme. In this programme new CA's get a chance to do various activities.

(b) The GMCS is done in two Parts:

GMCS - I

Students have to undergo 15 days GMCS after completing its 12 months of practical training under a CA.

GMCS - II

Students who have completed 3 years of practical training under a CA & completed GMCS - I are eligible for 15 days GMCS - II (whether cleared CA final exam or not)
