Hello,

Thank you for choosing CareerGuide and writing to us. I can see your interest into fashion designing and I am glad to guide you through this. Fashion designing is a profession just like any other career and it does require you to have studied relevant basic qualifications at a degree level. In India, there are numerous institutes offering fashion designing courses at bachelors, diploma and masters level. Choosing the right course and the right institute is certainly crucial for a career in fashion designing and management.

As said, a basic degree level in fashion designing is mandatory. You can therefore consider studying BA/ BSc or B.Des. Fashion designing. Fashion designing is a vast ocean and it may require you to be specialized in a specific area of interest. Therefore you will have to choose the right elective during your Bachelors degree to see where you want to work.

Apart from BSc/ BA/ B.Des. Fashion designing, you may also consider doing courses in Apparel management, Accessory design, Fashion management, fabric designing, Textile manufacturing and design, western fashion, traditional fashion attire, fashion brand advertising management, fashion communication management, fashion media management, garment manufacturing technology, life style designing, fashion styling and image design, luxury fashion management and fashion marketing and retail management. You have the above variety of courses in India at both Bachelors and Masters level.

To qualify for a Bachelors degree admission in India, you need to have passed 10th class and 12th class. Reputed schools do conduct an entrance test to potential candidates to test their basic knowledge in maths, English and interest into designing. A good pass is also required to be admitted into Bachelors degree. Few institutes like the NIFT, NID which are very popular mostly consider selecting the top 200 students for their degree admission. It is necessary to prepare well for such entrance tests to be qualified with a rank in their tests, if you are serious to embark a career into fashion designing.

If you have studied a different subject in undergraduate level and are willing to step into fashion designing, you may choose to do a second Bachelors through lateral entry or a one or two year Diploma in Fashion designing. Alternatively for those who have already had a degree in Bachelors level fashion designing, they may consider doing a Masters course like the MA/ MSc/ M.Des. in Fashion designing. More recently, MBA in Fashion designing is also getting popular and this may also interest you.

To consider some top schools from India, NIFT, NID, Peal academy of fashion, Vogue institute of fashion are reputable and well recognised for the fashion related degrees.

Hope this helps. All the best.
