Dear Parth

Thanks for visiting us CareerGuide.com!!!

You are pursuing an excellent course work at Post Graduate level which has broad implications in scientific research world. As far as competitive exams are concerned it is up to you where you want to excel your career as an academician, scientist-researcher, administrator-advisor, or self reliance --
It is very important to know about your strength which must be reflecting in your academic record that is why you are doing MSc in Environmental Sciences. Again Environmental Sciences gives you various branches in specialized manner. Here you have to screen the module of your interest and then draw the statement of your purpose which will give you confinement in terms of job outlook which restrict you from the deviation. In general students do not look into the personal interest and in depth knowledge and applying anywhere sarcastically irrespective of interest and suitability which become fatal and consequently you dilute the objective of career.
To find the interesting pathway for the job exploration you need to see the course structure what you have studied and explore its objectives similarly you will find the kind of opportunities in the job market either in govt. sector or in private.

It is not difficult to find the list of competitive exams for the students of environments sciences. First you should think for the higher studies -Ph.D in Env. Sci as Jawaharlal Nehru University offers you Ph.D degree program through entrance test. You need to qualify with the intensity and back up of research fellowship that could be earned through UGC-NET, CSIR-JRF, and any other fellowship which can support your doctoral study.

UGC-NET, CSIR-NET-JRF enable you for lectureship at college level or university level though Phd is mandatory for academic promotion so either you can join as lecturership then get enrolled for Ph.D or first do Ph.D and then join academic job it depends on your mood and situation.

Ministry of Environmental Sciences provides the job in the same area at scientific level, regulatory level, Department of Pollution Control at state level also recruits people like you.

Many private industries are also providing the job.

Just try to explore the websites for requisite information and then prepare yourself.

Good luck.

Dear friend Parth, thank you for approaching CareerGuide.com for your query. Here I must appreciate you for your decision on pursuing the BSc integrated program in environmental biotechnology. Here you have not mentioned from which university or institute you are pursuing this integrated program. The beauty of this subject combination is that simultaneously you are studying biotechnology as well as environmental sciences, and both of the subjects are in huge demand today in governmental as well as in private sector.

As per your question, the "competitive exams" you have not mentioned what type, whether related to civil services or to your subject. Since you are studying the science stream, therefore I would suggest you related to your discipline only.

After completing your M.Sc program, you should try for two things, one to clear National eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC-CSIR to make eligible for make an entry at assistant professor or lecturer. On the other hand, the good percentile in the exam of GATE will also help you in your career. Second, you should alo try to get admission in doctoral degree program. There are many prestigious universities in India, where you can apply. The best universities are University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Madurai Kaamraj University, Osmania University, Manipal University, Amity University and many more.

The doctoral degree will make you eligible for making an entry into the colleges, universities and institutes.

You have to decide whether you wish to make your career as academician or scientist, accordingly you will be able to plan your future and for competitive exams. The ministry of environment and forest, Government of India, and pollution control board od central government and state government do have many openings for the environment and biotechnology stream. You better regularly in touch with news paper advertisements.

If you wish to work abroad, then in western hemisphere and Middle East there are lot of job opportunities. In Gulf Countries, in Petrochemical organization, there is great scope of environmental scientist. After obtaining required education, you should also get some relevant experience, that will help you in getting a decent job. Now target to finish your degree program with good academic grades.

With all my best wishes,

Good Luck to your all plannings..

Dear Parth

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com It is good to hear that you will be a MSc graduate in environmental biotechnology. So the competitive exams that you want to give are completely dependent on what is your next move - studying/ working?

If you want to study further, then PhD is the only option. A PhD is a Doctorate degree that is the last academic and also the highest qualification. If you want to do this PhD degree in environmental engineering then you should consider taking up the relevant competitive exams accordingly. Before that it is also required to know where you want to do the PhD in India? If you focus on any of the IIT for a PhD in Biotechnology with environmental biotechnology or even a PhD in environmental biotechnology itself, then you are required to sit for the following competitive exams.

  1. GATE: IIT's main post graduate level entrance test is GATE exam. You will have questions in biology and maths at this entrance test and they will be completely based upon your undergraduate syllabus. If you get a high rank in GATE, you will also be placed in top IIT's in India. Apart from this, IIt also consider students with UGC NET score. It is required for you to sit this tests and pass it with a high mark. Passing the test qualifies you to apply for a PhD. Very few IIT'S also permit students with CSIR exam score. Apart from this if you also want to get monthly stipend all through your PhD years then it is necessary to write UGC JRF and qualify too.

2. Any where other than IIT: Then you dont need to write GATE. But UGC NET/ CSIR is 100% mandatory. Again, if you want to get monthly stipend then passing the UGC JRF is also mandatory.

3. There are some private colleges that have a system to make students write their own entrance test and give admission. Even such colleges treat UGC NET as the basic eligibility criteria. These colleges doesnt want you to have write and qualify the UGC JRF as they will most often employ the PhD students as lecturers at their college. They may offer you either a tuition fee reduction or instead pay you a minimal salary of at least 12000 per month. Please be aware that this is done only by private or deemed universities.

In what so ever position, i highly recommend you to take the UGC NET exam. Even in case you are not interested in doing a PhD, this UGC NET will qualify you for research jobs and lecturer jobs in colleges or universities.
