Well, Namrata, let’s know about the CSE and the procedure to appear in the exam. First upon this is not a course like any academic or university degree/diplomas. It’s basically a competitive exam and everyone who has completed his degree is eligible to appear for IAS-CSE (Civil Services Examination) conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). UPSC is an autonomous central authority and it conducts CSE every year regularly. This is a common exam for IAS/IFS/IPS and other Central Services of Group A and B.

After completion of your graduation or even while you are in the final year of the degree, you can apply for this exam through official website of the UPSC, i.e. www.upsc.gov.in. There is an online application form and you have to fill up it with all the due information regarding your degree details and your personal information. If you come under any category then you can avail reservation and you have to provide details of the related certificate. The fee for CSE has normally been 100/- rupees and Female/SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted from this application fee. You can pay the fee by using net banking or by printed challan.

Now let’s talk about the whole process CSE exam and the time required for it. You know the CSE is a competitive exam so you are supposed to compete with lakhs of candidates at Prelims stage and some fifteen thousand candidates at the Mains stage and the finally if you clear Mains Exam, you compete some three thousand odd candidates to become one among the chosen few where around one thousand successful candidates appear in the final list.

Generally, notification for the CSE Prelims comes in the month of the February every Year and You are supposed to attend Prelims in the month of May/June. Accordingly, Mains exam will be held in the month of October every year and Personality Tests (Interviews) will be conducted in March/April. The final result gets published in May/June. So it’s essentially the process which takes 1 complete year to get it completed.

There is an interesting fact that you have to reappear for the exam if you don’t get qualified for the next stage and it continues till your attempts get over or if you get selected for IAS. The IAS officers are responsible for the District and above level administration and these posts require you to be an all-rounder generalist who has the knowledge of all things, unlike expert who knows everything about a specific field. Here to clear this exam, you have to study diverse socio-economical issues along with some static syllabus which comes in the official notification of UPSC in the Employment Newspaper and on the official website of the UPSC itself.

The Prelims is an objective test with multiple choice questions and there is a negative marking where one mark will be deducted for three wrong answers. Mains exam is all about writing. After clearing Mains you appear in the final stage, i.e. Personality Test and on your performance there, you have the chance to be one among such around IAS officers.
