Neurology is basically a branch of medical science which is concerned with diseases and disorders of the nervous system. Neurology is the combination of two words, first is ‘neuron’ which means nerve and second is ‘logic’ which means ‘the study of’. Human body contains a 100 billion neurons located in the brain able to generate their own impulses and of transmitting and receiving impulses from adjacent cells. Neurology gives us the information about:

  • The autonomic nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and the central nervous system.
  • Functional and structural disorders or diseases of the nervous system varying from defects at the time of birth to degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Humankind has suffered from disorders related to nervous system for centuries. Neurology also involves interpreting and understanding of electrical and imaging studies. Imaging studies include CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans.

 What is a neurologist?

A medical practitioner who specializes in the field of neurology is known as a neurologist. These experts are physicians who undergo special training for treating, diagnosing and managing the existing disorders of the nervous system. The profession of a neurologist is highly challenging being a medical field which deals with brain disorders makes it one of the most complicated career paths. These specialists treat disorders such as multiple sclerosis, migraine, depression, anxiety, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, trauma etc.There are primarily three types of neurology: Child Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology and pain medicine. Clinical Neurophysiology deals with treatment and diagnosis of neurological disorders of peripheral, central and autonomic nervous system. Eligibility

In order to become a neurologist, one need to complete schooling with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English with a minimum of 50% marks. One has to appear in medical entrance exam in order to get admission in the best institute. These medical tests are conducted separately by various statesand by independent bodies such as PMT, AIPMT facilitated by CBSE. Some other tests are also conducted by PGI, AIIMS, AFMC, GMCH etc. May and June is usually the month in which these exams are held. After getting an MBBS degree, you need to go for DNB, MS and MD in general medicine then you have to further specialize in Neurology and because it is a PG program one has to again appear in an entrance exam in order to get admission in it. Here is a step by step description to pursue DM in Neurology once you get admission in MBBS:

  • The first step is to pursue MBBS which is a course of 5-year duration including training period.
  • DNB or MD in Medicine, duration for this would be 3 years, this will function as specialization in Neurology.
