NIOS stands for ‘National Institute of Open Schooling. In 1979, CBSE (Central Board of School Education) started a flexible inbuilt project for providing quality education. NIOS Courses

About NIOS- offers five types of NIOS courses based on open education programme:

1. OBE (Open Basic Education):

Open Basic Education is introduced in NIOS courses for providing basic education to the learners. The motto of this education is ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’. This elementary education programme is equivalent to any other regular affiliated formal schools.

'A' Level Course: This course is equivalent to class III.
'B' Level Course: This course is equivalent to class V.
‘C’ Level Course: This course is equivalent to class VIII.

2. Secondary Course: The NIOS courses is equivalent to class Xth. Students who have passed class 8Th can pursue the secondary level course. NIOS offers this course in 9 regional languages; English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Odia. This course includes 28 subjects among which 17 are the language subjects. Students have to choose minimum 5 core subjects along with 2 language subjects. This course can be completed between 2-5 years of time duration.

3. Senior Secondary Course: The Senior Secondary NIOS courses is equivalent to class XII. This course is offered in six regional languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Urdu and Odia. This course includes 29 subjects among which 9 are the language subjects. Students have to choose minimum 5 core subjects along with 2 language subjects. This course can be completed between 2-5 years of time duration.

4. Vocational Education Courses: NIOS offers various Vocational Courses along with these basic and secondary courses. The objective is to teach students about target skills in various fields such as Agriculture and Animal Husbandry; Business, Accounts and Commerce, IT and Technology; Engineering and Architecture, Health and Paramedical Science, Home Science, Hospitality, Management programs, Teacher Training and much more. There are more than hundred types of vocational courses which can be selected by the students as per their interests.

5. Life Enrichment Programmes: These are the NIOS courses offered by NIOS to enrich their students in the fields such as women empowerment(Paripurana Mahila), Yoga and meditation, Indian music and enrichment of knowledge. These courses can also be conducted as certified examination courses.

What is NIOS Exam Procedure

About NIOS, public exams are held twice a year, firstly during the month of April and May and secondly during the month of October and November as per the date sheet announced by the institute itself. Students can appear for the examination on demand at secondary and senior secondary level exams only in those subjects which they opt for subject wise learning. For Academic Secondary and Sr. Secondary:

They can visit the nearest study center or AI’s (accreditation center) and ask them to help you to register online.
They can also get online admissions at the nearest regional centers.
Students can also get help from the Common Services Centre (CSC’s) of the Government of India for getting online NIOS admissions Form.

For Vocational Education:

All learners can apply for vocational education. The minimum eligibility criteria will be 10th pass from any of the recognized Board of school education. Students can choose subject wise and state wise list for getting online NIOS admission forms.

For ITI students:

Students who want to pursue IT and technology field can apply for the online ITI learner programme powered by NIOS. This is a 2-year regular course offered to the students under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). Students opt to choose minimum five subjects. 3 subjects will be the computer based subjects, one will be the language subject and one other subject can be chosen among other core subjects offered by NIOS itself.

Under NEPIA Project:

NIOS also offer courses under NEPIA scheme. It is a joint educational project for Indian Army(NEPIA) and NIOS to provide Human Resource Quotient along with various educational qualifications up to the Indian Army troops. For Double Enrollment:

If a student passed secondary or senior secondary exam in a regular school then he will be eligible for a higher level of course. He can choose up to four subjects to gain their academics. After passing the exam, only the mark sheet will be issued by NIOS, but not by the certificates.

More About NIOS, If a student has passed middle or high school level through a foreign board and wants to take admission for higher education through NIOS, then he should have to attach the letter from the embassy that you had passed the exam level equivalent to Indian exam.
