NIOS stands for ‘National Institute of Open Schooling. In 1979, CBSE (Central Board of School Education) started a flexible inbuilt project for providing quality education. Formerly, it was known as the National Open School till 2002. Later, it was established as the name NIOS in 1989 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The motive behind open schooling is to provide universal, regular and holistic education to bring a rise in literacy level in remote as well as rural areas. The aim of this institute is to support skill development and flexible learning methodology so that most of the students can get an education even after their school or working hours. NIOS facilitates their students in a phased manner to provide education at pre-degree level courses, secondary level and vocational training. The whole of the curriculum is designed by the NIOS itself, leading with a certified examination process similar to the CBSE and CISCE boards, through the open learning system. In spite of distance education, NIOS also provides regular courses at the stage of secondary and senior secondary levels.
