India has a very rich historical and cultural relation with the subject of sex. India is the land of ‘Kamasutra’, a book written by Vatsyayana which deals with the art of sex, society, the responsibility of man and woman in the society, etc. However, after colonization, just like the Europeans, Indians evolved and became a lot more prude.

The first sex-education of a child must be at their home. When a child asks questions like “how are kids born?” or “why isn’t mom allowed to touch gods for five days every month?” let the answer of their parents not be some temporary satisfactory made-up answer.

The two possibilities that can happen if you give them a false explanation is that either they will believe it and be completely unaware of the dangers in the real world, or they will not believe it and will opt for seeking answers on their own which can be very dangerous as their vulnerability can be taken as an advantage for the exploiters very easily.

So here are a few reasons why we must opt for sex-education:

1. Career possibilities

sex education

As sex education is a taboo in India, the career-related in this field is also unapproached and unexplored. By being an online sex educator, making the uneducated people aware of birth control, starting an organization to spread awareness, being a sex-therapist, etc., this field has a lot to offer.

2. Awareness about birth control

The common mindset of the unaware people is that it is ok for them to have more than 3 children and they keep trying until a boy child is born. They do not realize the harmful effects of having more than 2 children because they are not aware of over-population.

Also, for people who cannot afford proper recreation and entertainment and sex being the only recreation for them, they have frequent unprotected sex because they are not aware about birth control methods either.

3. Safe sex

sex education

Teenage being in an impulsive time of life, they have often indulged in sex without even having proper knowledge and education about it. They are influenced by what the internet and television show them but don’t understand the lie hidden in it.

They are not aware about methods to practice safe sex, sexually transmitted diseases and the practice of consent. It is evident that most teenagers have sex just out of curiosity and end up causing great damage to their lives permanently.

4. Understanding of consent

Consent is something that should be taught by parents even before kids start their school lives. Whether they like to be cuddled by strangers, smooched by aunts and uncles and touched by anyone is their choice. Let them learn that if something makes them uncomfortable, they must ask them to stop or report those incidents to their parents.

Teaching them about good touch (a non-sexual way of showing love and affection) and bad touch (touching someone, mostly in their private parts, with sexual intention) is also a part of sex education and is mandatory, regardless of the gender. If this is not taught on time, it can leave long time damage on their life.

5. Not understanding their own body

Once puberty hits, the human body goes under a lot of physical and mental changes. They do not understand the significance of those changes and end up being frustrated.

For example, after puberty our body goes under some hormonal changes because of which the testosterone level of some women may increase and they might develop a hairy body which make them very insecure in their own skin, they consider themselves abnormal. Proper sex education teaches them what is normal and what is not, hence, in case a real problem arrives, they will be able to recognize it and comprehend it to their parents.

Sex education should not be limited or dependent on schools alone. Parents themselves must take initiative. Also, sex being a very sensitive topic, children might not feel comfortable learning about it for the first time in their schools, hence the first approach should always be made by the parents.
