The profile of a hotel manager is one of the most coveted positions in the hospitality sector. But as each coin has two sides so does this vocation. Here a few advantages and disadvantages of being a hotel manager.

Pros

  • The job will never get boring as one gets to dabble into a wide array of tasks with new challenging, different encounters and experiences every day.
  • The pay is good.  After reaching the managerial level, one can earn up to Rs. 50,000 on a monthly basis.
  • Not many degrees required.Practical education is paramount when it comes to hotel management. Those who are vying for entry level employment only need a high school diploma.
  •  There are many opportunities to expand one’s career.  Promotion from the front desk to higher positions is very likely depending on the quality of job and work experience. Not only this, one can have the fortune of working in the various branches of a hotel chain. The various profiles available include assistant manager, resident manager among others. One can supervise a range of fields such as catering, housekeeping, marketing etc.

  • The position of power.Hotel managers wield a powerful influence over the hotel staff.
  • No dearth of vacancies. There is an ever increasing demand for hotel managers as the opening of hotel branches renders job shortages impossible. Predictions pouring in indicate that this job market is expected to see an increase of about 12% in the next decade.
  • One can build a far reaching network. Since the job description entails lots of public dealing,  one interacts with people from diverse walks of life on a daily basis. This enables one to build a network of contacts.
  • The world is your oyster. One of the perks of working with an international hotel franchise is that one would have the chance to explore many countries due to their line of work. Many seminars and conferences are also held overseas.
  • Other benefits include on site residence or provision of an accommodation nearby on discounted rates, free vacations, conveyance provided by the company etc.

Cons

  • Working for long and unusual durations of time may not be your cup of tea.Since hotels are open round the clock, personnel have to work in shifts in the early morning hours or late at night. This is especially problematic for those who have young children. Weekends, holidays, festivals are a busy time for managers as this period attracts visitors and tourists. So it is highly unlikely that leave would be sanctioned for this period except in cases of emergencies. So working unsociable hours becomes a norm. Often employees have to clock in about 72 hours a week at least which makes sleeping and eating patterns irregular.

  • Work stress is an intrinsic feature. There is enormous pressure on managers regarding deadlines and high-quality service to be provided to the guests. Expectations of customers can be often sky high and it can be grueling to deliver upon the tall promises that hotels make. The domain of hospitality is about making available the best possible assistance. Errors and mistakes are not taken very lightly.

  • With great power comes great responsibility.Being a manager requires one to make strong and tough decisions for the sake of the establishment. One might have to sack subordinates from their posts if it is believed that they aren’t doing their duties properly despite repeated warnings. A manager must also serve as a mediator among staff members as well. They are also in charge of budgeting and if a financial slip up occurs, the manager would have to face action against her/him.

  • Dealing with snooty and high maintenance customers can get on one’s nerves. One may encounter grumbling guests who make a fuss about the services offered to them. Managers are often at the receiving end of the ire of their patrons, but they are always supposed to appease them. Such lodgers must be dealt with their complaints tactfully and pleasantly.

The industry can be quite unstable and unpredictable in the sense that factors such as weather and economic crisis can threaten the job security of employees.  All those working in this sphere are under physical and emotional tension too.
