Career possibilities in performing arts are- actor, circus artist, stand-up comedian, session musician, singer, dancer, director, producer, stage manager, screenwriter, stage crew, set designer, theatre technician, sound designer, lighting designer, teacher or lecturer, drama therapist, music therapist, dance or movement therapist, arts administrator, theatre front of house etc.
CAREER AS A STAGE MANAGER:
Stage managers are responsible for supervising the practicalities that are needed to run a play. They also look after the rehearsal process and communication between teams to ensure everything is ready.
CAREER AS A STAGE CREW MEMBER:
They prepare the stage for actors to perform, makes necessary adjustments such as set changing during the performance and clearing everything away once the show is over. Sometimes they are also involved in constructing the set using carpentry or metallic works and safely placing it on the stage. Stage crew members also help to set up sound and lighting equipment. However, their work is not fixed, and they are responsible for a variety of tasks during the performance.
CAREER AS A PLAYWRIGHT:
They usually write scripts for a play or musical. If you want to become a playwright, you have to write scripts, check the scripts and edit them. Playwrights write completely new plays and they are responsible for adapting existing works such as novels into plays. They also create new versions of older plays that are previously written in foreign languages while working in collaboration with a translator.
CAREER AS AN ACTOR:
Actors generally work in theatre productions, TV dramas, radio plays and films. They also work in theatre-in-education performances. They are self-employed. They don’t have permanent jobs, and take different parts with different employers as and when they are offered.
CAREER AS A PRODUCER:
They are in charge of the background scenes. Producers ensure the show gets successful commercially by delivering quality performance on time. Producers need a wide range of skills. They are also responsible for planning budgets and oversees legal matters such as employment contracts, insurance cover and copyright.
CAREER AS A SET DESIGNER:
They work with the directors and design sets that have visual impact and ties in with the director’s vision for the production. If you love art and creativity, then this can be a dream career for you. Set designers create the visual side of a play, musical or opera. They are also involved in setting up the overall tone and direction for other elements like lighting design, costume and props.
CAREER AS A DRAMA THERAPIST:
You will have to get a degree in a subject related to theatre or psychology to become a drama therapist. They don’t work in theatres, yet their work is closely related to theatres. They help people to explore and understand their feelings, behaviour and helps to bring improvement in their lives. Drama therapists work in settings such as the NHS, schools, prisons, young offenders, institutions and charities. Those who get employment in the television and film industry get a good salary.
